Imagine the resulting clusterfuck if they could call everything. Games would last 6 hours.

Then you get games like LA where nothing is called. Even the obvious penalties. I gave up trying to understand it.

Grimson the Insitgator sucks as it is. It's the absolute worst rule in Hockey. Not even the officials know how to call it.

Linesman do call two penalties. TMM and an occassional high stick, drawing blood, that the officials on the ice miss.

Other than that off sides, Icing, and dropping the puck is what they do.

They actually only call TMM. Everything else must be reported to the referees at the next stop in play.

Couldn't agree more.

Actually the Ref calls the TMM as well. Linesmen just inform them. As they do with the high stick missed and the DOG.

You are right... I just looked it up... they can almost call anything, but the only penalty they can stop play for is TMM.

32.4 Reporting to Referee - The Linesman shall give to the Referees his interpretation of any incident that may have taken place during the game.

The Linesman may stop play and report what he witnessed to the Referees when:

(i) There are too many men on the ice

(ii) Articles are thrown on the ice from the players’ bench or penalty bench

(iii) When team personnel interfere with a game official

(iv) When a player who has lost or broken his stick receives one illegally

The Linesman must report upon completion of play, any circumstances pertaining to:

(i) Major penalties

(ii) Match penalties

(iii) Misconduct penalties

(iv) Game Misconduct penalties

(v) Abuse of Officials

(vi) Physical Abuse of Officials

(vii) Unsportsmanlike Conduct

(viii) Double-minor penalty when it is apparent that an injury has resulted from a high-stick that has gone undetected by the Referees

Should a Linesman witness a foul (above) committed by an attacking player or goalkeeper (undetected by the Referees) prior to the attacking team scoring a goal, the Linesman shall report what he witnessed to the Referees, the goal shall be disallowed and the appropriate penalty assessed.

And I actually believe a linesman fucked us over a couple years ago against the Sharks. APPARENTLY they saw some kind of infraction and then 4 minutes later the Hawks scored a goal and it was waved off.

It was a high stick missed by the Refs. It was a good call even though it cost a two goal swing. Taking ours away and giving them a goal.

Why don't goalies just close their 5 hole when Toews has a penalty shot or in a shoot out?

"I mean he fires it," Howard said. "He zips it there, but I thought I should've had it. That's his move to go five hole, so I was prepared for it. I just didn't get the legs closed fast enough. I've faced him a couple of times on penalty shots and that's what he does every single time, so I figured that's what he was going to do. I figured he was going to go five hole and he beat me. He's a good player."

I love Seabrook's slapshot - that was a rocket last night he blasted by Howard.

Bickells was identical, Scott was the "3rd" man in so to speak. Bickell recieved 2-5-10. Bertuzzi although doing the exact same thing Bickell did with Sarich, 5 just like Carcillo. Double standard or inconsistant officiating. Pick your poison.

Ah yea, that is right Bicks did exactly what Bert did....yup inconsistant, but with all of the other calls against the wings I wonder if they were trying to make it up.

Satisfying win.

I liked Hayes out there, didn't seem out of place at all and had a couple of good hits.

Hopefully they're not just shopping him, I hope he sticks around. Can't have too many big bodies out there.

Edit: He didn't seem afraid to go to the front of the net either. And the 4th line kept the puck at their end most of their shifts.

That was only 10 minutes into the game.

Since there's been some ref chat in this thread, I'll chime in to say I'd like to see refs overrule a bad call made by one of them if there is reason. All too often you see the ref the furthest from a situation call a penalty when the closer, who sees there is no infraction, keeps his whistle in the pocket. He should tell the other ref that it was nothing and the play would go on. It would probably help if they had headsets so they could instantly communicate about what goes on. The officiating has constantly been the weakest part of this pro league, especially when there seems to be no culpability for refs doing a bad job.

I think if there's some kind of actual accountability for refs and what they get wrong, things may change. I'm assuming there really isn't in place. And maybe it would help if the linesmen could call minor penalties as well, besides too many men.

The refs are accountable. It's just doesn't make the headlines. That said, the inconsistency gets really annoying.

And maybe it would help if the linesmen could call minor penalties as well, besides too many men.

You may want to rethink that one.
