The Blackhawks prevailed after the first two periods, but failed to sustain their success through the end. This was the first time this season the Hawks have lost in regulation after leading into the 3rd period, losing to the Dallas Stars 3-1.

Rookie Richard Bachman started for the Stars and gave the Blackhawks stars fits all night, stopping 26 of 27 shots.

Both teams came out of the 1st unscathed despite showing numerous opportunities with end-to-end action. Patrick Kane had a glorious opportunity when Patrick Sharp found him with a lead-pass into the offensive zone that gave Kane plenty of space to take a shot, but he was unable to convert. Later in the period, Adam Burish had a breakaway but Crawford was up to the task, reading his forehand/backhand move perfectly and getting his blocker on it.

Early the 2nd period, Ryan Garbutt ripped a snap shot past Corey Crawford but hit two pipes and stayed out of the net. The Hawks returned the favor with Patrick Sharp beating Bachman and ringing the post. Jimmy Hayes was robbed despite having a large opening, but Marian Hossa finally found the net by sneaking a shot past Bachman thanks to the hard work of Michael Frolik crashing the net. The Hawks dominated the middle frame by out-shooting the Stars 16-5. Along with his mark, Hossa rang another puck off the post and despite their effort, his tally stood as the lone goal of the game.

The Stars battled back in the 3rd period, returning the favor by out-shooting the Hawks 15-5 and potting 3 unanswered (and redirected) goals to rip the win out of the Blackhawks hands. Michael Ryder and Steve Ott were able to tip the puck past Corey Crawford to give the Stars the lead, and Loui Eriksson put the nail in the coffin by batting a puck that caromed off Brent Seabrook in the waning minutes of the game.

At the end of the day, the Blackhawks were outhit by the Stars 41 to 15. Most of the time I wouldn't point out the lack of physicality as a reason to lose, but as the game wore on it could have had an effect on their mental state. That said, they will never be known for rough and tumble hockey, and that's fine as long as they find a way to push through teams that are willing to play them hard and burn them where it counts.

Regardless of how you view this game the Blackhawks put together a solid 45 minutes of hockey before seeing their momentum slip away along with their lead.

"Tough, tough, tough. Brutal," Joel Quenneville said. "Tonight, everything was going in a real good way, and then we had a third period that you wonder where that came from.

"It was right in our hands, and we let it get away. Maybe on the tying goal, it was a play, but we can't give up that play. That's a goal that can't happen, and they got some momentum off it. From there, we weren't very good."

The most brutal part of the night may have been the Blackhawks inability to dent the net more than once against rookie goaltender Richard Bachman. They had a plethora of chances to put the game away and simply came up short, had they found a way to solve Bachman and his lucky posts this could have been a very different game despite their 3rd period breakdowns.

One thing is for sure -- the curse of back-up goaltenders continues to haunt the Hawks snipers.

SO CLOSE, YET SO FAR AWAY

Corey Crawford was 10:35 away from earning the Blackhawks first shutout of the season, but could not hang on with the defense allowing the Stars to buzz around the net.

The Blackhawks streak extends to last season, where they shutout the Vancouver Canucks 5-0 in game 5 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The sad part is, this is the closest they have been to breaking the habit.

BLACKHAWKS THREE STARS OF THE GAME

1. Marian Hossa

2. Patrick Sharp

3. Jimmy Hayes

Was a horrible melt down by everyone after ott scored. Everyone.

Team still needs a stay at home physical blueliner. As much as i like olsen the kid is a horrible skater. Leddy was having a good defensive game like everyone else until that 3rd period.

The Hawks lost ground on the entire western conference tonight. THE ENTIRE WESTERN CONFERENCE. Cool.

Forwards were terrible in the 3rd at covering the points and getting the puck out when they needed to. Defense couldn't clear the net, and Crow seemed like he got frustrated, shame how one bad period cost us 2 very important points.

Yep. You could see it on their faces after the goal went in. An "ah ****, here we go" look. Should have taken the time out.

Q sucked ass again tonight. Scott playing two whole minutes (why dress this ****** bag?)...no timeout called when he should have....etc. etc. But this was a total team collapse in the third periods. They should be embarrassed.

Any goalie would have been frustrated after allowing three tipped goals in 5 minutes. The D failed him.

After Bolland won the draw, Q should have done a better job of clearing the puck.

Also, Kitchen shouldn't have left his point/vacated the zone.

Epic failure on their part.

Crawford didn't play bad......but it's Waite's fault anyway.

Players don't have any accountability here.

I play goal, trust me I'm quite aware of how frustrating it can get. However I've noticed some body language and actions of his after some goals that I don't like. The shrug and look at defenseman is an obvious one, didn't like how he slamed his stick on the top his net after the third goal either.

I understand his frustration, and I can understand the public displays of it every once in a while, especially the stick taps on the nets, but the shrug and point and probably say something at your defensemen does nothing but show a teammate up

Pretty much agree with this entire post. You never saw that side of Crawford last season. Best memory he can have is no memory at all at this point, definitely something that needs to be worked on. From my experience, no reaction is the best reaction.

That said, I thought Crawford played well... can't really blame him on any of those goals. I understand why he would be frustrated, and it's OK to feel like that, just don't show it.

The best goaltender we have had in the last 20 years was the most fiery too.
