The Blackhawks prevailed after the first two periods, but failed to sustain their success through the end. This was the first time this season the Hawks have lost in regulation after leading into the 3rd period, losing to the Dallas Stars 3-1.
Rookie Richard Bachman started for the Stars and gave the Blackhawks stars fits all night, stopping 26 of 27 shots.
Both teams came out of the 1st unscathed despite showing numerous opportunities with end-to-end action. Patrick Kane had a glorious opportunity when Patrick Sharp found him with a lead-pass into the offensive zone that gave Kane plenty of space to take a shot, but he was unable to convert. Later in the period, Adam Burish had a breakaway but Crawford was up to the task, reading his forehand/backhand move perfectly and getting his blocker on it.
Early the 2nd period, Ryan Garbutt ripped a snap shot past Corey Crawford but hit two pipes and stayed out of the net. The Hawks returned the favor with Patrick Sharp beating Bachman and ringing the post. Jimmy Hayes was robbed despite having a large opening, but Marian Hossa finally found the net by sneaking a shot past Bachman thanks to the hard work of Michael Frolik crashing the net. The Hawks dominated the middle frame by out-shooting the Stars 16-5. Along with his mark, Hossa rang another puck off the post and despite their effort, his tally stood as the lone goal of the game.
The Stars battled back in the 3rd period, returning the favor by out-shooting the Hawks 15-5 and potting 3 unanswered (and redirected) goals to rip the win out of the Blackhawks hands. Michael Ryder and Steve Ott were able to tip the puck past Corey Crawford to give the Stars the lead, and Loui Eriksson put the nail in the coffin by batting a puck that caromed off Brent Seabrook in the waning minutes of the game.
At the end of the day, the Blackhawks were outhit by the Stars 41 to 15. Most of the time I wouldn't point out the lack of physicality as a reason to lose, but as the game wore on it could have had an effect on their mental state. That said, they will never be known for rough and tumble hockey, and that's fine as long as they find a way to push through teams that are willing to play them hard and burn them where it counts.
Regardless of how you view this game the Blackhawks put together a solid 45 minutes of hockey before seeing their momentum slip away along with their lead.
"Tough, tough, tough. Brutal," Joel Quenneville said. "Tonight, everything was going in a real good way, and then we had a third period that you wonder where that came from.
"It was right in our hands, and we let it get away. Maybe on the tying goal, it was a play, but we can't give up that play. That's a goal that can't happen, and they got some momentum off it. From there, we weren't very good."
The most brutal part of the night may have been the Blackhawks inability to dent the net more than once against rookie goaltender Richard Bachman. They had a plethora of chances to put the game away and simply came up short, had they found a way to solve Bachman and his lucky posts this could have been a very different game despite their 3rd period breakdowns.
One thing is for sure -- the curse of back-up goaltenders continues to haunt the Hawks snipers.
SO CLOSE, YET SO FAR AWAY
Corey Crawford was 10:35 away from earning the Blackhawks first shutout of the season, but could not hang on with the defense allowing the Stars to buzz around the net.
The Blackhawks streak extends to last season, where they shutout the Vancouver Canucks 5-0 in game 5 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The sad part is, this is the closest they have been to breaking the habit.
