The Edmonton Oilers followed up their 9-2 drubbing of the Blackhawks with another win on Monday night with a closer 4-3 contest.
The young Oilers took advantage of the Blackhawks on the power-play, more specifically on Daniel Carcillo's 5 minute major for boarding Tom Gilbert. They popped 2 goals off that play which not only hurt the Blackhawks on the scoreboard but ultimately may hurt Daniel Carcillo's Blackhawk career.
As a result of the hit, Tom Gilbert flew into the boards and slammed on top of Carcillo's knee which could result into a season-ending injury that may require surgery if it is as serious as it looked. If not, he will surely miss time with Brendan Shanaban bringing down the gavel on his 2nd offense this season.
Despite the hefty play made by Carcillo the Blackhawks weren't exactly terrible. In fact, #13 helped Jonathan Toews open the scoring with a pass from the left boards to allow Johnny to pot his 22nd of the year.
Smyth and Hall then paid the Blackhawks back with Carcillo's crushing blow by scoring 2 goals to get the lead. But soon after Niklas Hjalmarsson answered the bell by putting the puck on net and giving Andrew Brunette an opportunity to tip the puck in the net to tie the game. Sutton closed out the period with another goal; dipping from the point with the Blackhawks scrambling for positioning.
In the 3rd period, Ben Eager floated an easy backhand past Crawford mid-way through the period to give the Oilers another 2 goal advantage. The Blackhawks would battle back with Jimmy Hayes scoring his first NHL goal but the comeback would cease with Devin Dubnyk shutting the door the rest of the way.
THE ROOKIE WATCH
Jimmy Hayes had another great game. Scoring his first NHL goal and showing his physical presence is really something the Blackhawks have lacked all year and may provide some serious value that Bryan Bickell has not been able to provide.
One thing I've noticed is that for a rookie, Hayes has commanded a lot of space from the opposition due to his sheer size. Although he was not credited for a single hit tonight (which is BS) he still has shown his willingness to use his big body in the power-forward role.
Its hard to judge whether or not the Blackhawks would be interested in keeping Hayes on the club for the rest of the year considering their habit for rotating prospects every couple games but if he keeps playing this way it's quite clear that there isn't a single prospect that can really provide the Blackhawks with any skill set close to what he brings. I would not be surprised if he found his role (a role that the Blackhawks desperately need) and stayed here for the rest of the year or until a trade replaces him.
