The Nashville Predators rolled right past the Blackhawks for the second straight time this season. Nashville had come off a back-to-back scenario but the injury depleted Blackhawks had trouble scoring from the start.
Pekka Rinne was outstanding again, playing a major role in both wins. In this case, he made 24 saves allowing only a single goal while Crawford made 23 saves at the other end, only allowing 2 of his own.
Both goaltenders played very well, but the Blackhawks offense could not prevail only netting 1 goal on the night without Jonathan Toews or Patrick Sharp to help provide more shooting options.
Dave Bolland was elevated to 1st line duties but that quickly changed as Joel Quenneville pulled another monkey out of the hat. That monkey coached the rest of the game and boy, oh boy, could he juggle.
Despite all the line juggling, Hossa helped produce the Blackhawks only goal by feeding Bolland. The two of them only played 1.59% of the game together even-strength while Quenneville opted to keep Bickell, Mayers, and Smith together for 11.11% of the game.
Basically, he decided to shuffle the offense on the top 3 lines, moving our only goal scorer through 6 different line combinations while keeping Marian Hossa away from him as much as possible--the only production Bolland has seen this season has come from Hossa. There's nothing basic about it and infact its rather complicated in a time that this team needs simplicity. In a game in desperate need of offense, how does this seem to be a logical choice?
It's not.
Yes, they both played together on the power-play. It was the only production the Hawks had success with. But, Bolland was to begin the game with Kane and Stalberg on his wings. Shortly after Quenneville opted to put Kane with 2 rookies, Andrew Shaw and Jimmy Hayes. Bolland was mixed in the shuffle along with Hossa and Stalberg but despite that fact they only hit the ice together once as they all shared time with the likes of Brandon Pirri, Marcus Kruger, and Andrew Brunette.
All of this might seem confusing because it is. If it's this confusing just discussing it, imagine how the players must feel when they don't even know who their line-mate is for the next shift?
Lets hope Jonathan Toews returns soon, because unlike the Pittsburgh Penguins we do not have Dan Bylsma running the bench. Instead, we have a panic button.
