Andrew Shaw was inches away from a hat trick while Patrick Kane and the rest of the gang littered the boxscore with a 5-2 drubbing over the Washington Capitals on Sunday night.
Corey Crawford was rarely called upon early in the game as the Blackhawks outshot the Capitals 12-0 in the first 15 minutes of the game until Mike Green finally registered Washington's first shot of the game 16:02 into the 1st period. Another great start translated to the Blackhawks gaining a 2-0 lead heading into the 2nd period.
Andrew Shaw kicked things off by tipping a puck past Michal Neuvirth by jumping in the air, perhaps a reputation he is beginning to build for his career. Viktor Stalberg also contributed with a highlight reel goal, chasing down an errant pass and beating Orlov to the puck for a clean break on net -- perhaps one of the most impressive displays of individual skill seen all year.
The Capitals found a great break in the middle frame as Keith Aucoin picked off a pass waist level from Niklas Hjalmarrson and gave the puck to Mike Knuble who made no mistake using Dylan Olsen as a screen. The Hawks responded minutes later as Patrick Kane and Andrew Brunette connected with a give-and-go where Neuvirth was left in no-mans land. Andrew Shaw popped his 2nd goal of the night later in the period but Alexander Ovechkin responded shortly after with a burst of world class skill, leaving Duncan Keith and Corey Crawford with twisted jockstraps.
An exciting 2nd period was followed with a dull 3rd, although Bryan Bickell put the nail in the coffin on an empty net goal.
The Hawks ended the night outshooting the Capitals 29-18, they also dominated at the face-off dot with a 65% success rate. Not only did the Blackhawks hammer the Capitals with five goals, but 10 different players were involved and contributed points.
TRADE DEADLINE GIVES NEW LIFE
The Blackhawks are now 7-1-1 since the trade deadline, which saw additions of Johnny Oduya, Brandon Bollig, and Andrew Shaw to the line-up while John Scott departed for the Big Apple.
Andrew Shaw has contributed 4 goals and 2 assist since returning to the Blackhawks, while Brandon Bollig has already compiled 41 PIM. The fresh acquisition of Johnny Oduya has also seen it's gains, providing tremendous help to the Blackhawks 2nd defensive pairing with 4 points and a plus-5 rating.
