AL West? Anaheim, and Seattle are in the hunt. If Texas is healthy they'll be back in it, never count out the A's.

You're right that the central has 4 teams who could be in the playoffs. But that isn't because all the teams are super good, its because all the teams are in that same range of wins. This isn't the AL East of years past where the Yankees, Red Sox, and Rays are all 3 of the 4 best teams in the AL duking it out.

The AL West doesn't have much pitching. The Mariners are good, but the rest of the division has gotten significantly weaker. Oakland is just weird. The Rangers are quietly running their organization into the ground with bad trades and weird acquisitions. The Angels aren't getting the ROI they thought they would, and have gotten older by the minute. The Central, team for team, is better imo.

The two western divisions are the toughest divisions in baseball. Giants, Dodgers, A's, Angels, are legit and I think that the Padres with their additions have a chance at a wildcard also. Seattle also could make a run with an addition or two.

What would make a division the best in baseball?

That would be the deepest division; the division with the most playoff caliber teams. The Royals, Indians, Tigers and White Sox are as good as anybody in the AL. No other division is deeper than the AL Central in that regard.

Other than SF and the Dodgers, the NL West is weak. The Padres got Kemp who is a shadow of himself and injury prone, and some nice pieces. They do not, however have the pitching to be regarded as a playoff team.

The AL West is Seattle and LA. The A's have nothing on the roster that indicates legitimate playoff contender. The Rangers stink.

I only called it weak in terms of wins that it will take to win the division.

Should've clarified it better. Sorry.

No sweat. I disagree though, to me less wins to take the division is indicative of overall parity; highly competitive teams from top to bottom. Minnesota is the lone exception due tonpitching.

I don't see how you can say the NL west is "weak" and then mention the Dodgers and the Giants? You need to remember that the Padres face those two team a lot each year and this year got much better. Kemp was a steal for them and now they have a very good to outstanding outfield. That division is strong. And the AL West is also a tough division, certainly better than the Central. The Central will be competitive but not because they are very good talent wise but rather that they beast each other up and have no top notch team. That is a good thing, BTW for the White Sox who with a couple of more moves could be the class of an over-all weak division.

I clearly said the NL West has two playoff caliber teams. The AL Central has four solid playoff teams, including the AL defending champs. No other division has four teams with good to excellent pitching and balanced lineups. Any of the four could wind up representing the AL in the WS.

4 > 2

Not as I see it. The AL central does not have 4 solid play-off teams. As I see it, they will have one representative in the play-offs and that will be whoever wins the division. And that winner may be somewhere around a .500 team.

What would make a division the best in baseball?

I'd say that would be the division that has the highest winning percentage over-all. The division that beats up teams in the other divisions.

They had two last year. Given the improvements for the White Sox and the retooling of Det, KC, and a possible dark horse in Cle, I see no reason they can't repeat that.

I think Hawk is severely underestimating Cleveland and Detroit. Both clubs have solid rotations and formidable lineups. The Sox have added the most talent, and they have enough potential to improve by 10 to 15 games at least. KC will be very good as well, with the best bullpen in baseball.

So just looking at number of teams over .500 one would say the AL Central and AL West were the best.

The entire AL is wide open. Hard to peg any team really as the best in a division. The NL has pretty clear favorites with the Dodgers, Cardinals, and Nationals all a leg up on the competition.

The AL East is all over the place. I could see 4 teams in the WC hunt from that division, or a winner with about 87 wins. All teams there really have big needs in the rotation so it is hard to judge who will break out.

The Tigers take a big step back losing Scherzer, but they can still win the Central for another year or two before spiraling towards the cellar. A lot is going to depend on Verlander. Not big on the Indians, but could see the Sox and Royals also taking the Central.

The West could go any way really. The Angels are going to be good, but they need their big money guys to actually produce. The Mariners missed the playoffs by one game last season, and really improved their lineup. Rangers should be in the playoff mix now that everyone is healthy, and many still see the A's as contenders. I could see almost 12 teams from the AL making the playoffs with no clear favorite in any division. Should be fun to watch play out

Not in my judgement. I think that right now the two western divisions have the best over-all chance of winning games. I may be wrong but as I see it the Sox got better in a weak division while Detroit, and KC got appreciably worse.
