The best hockey boardgame I know of...

Strat-O-Matic Hockey | Board Game | BoardGameGeek

I think I had most of the seasons (with the extra player sets) from 1983-84 to the early 1990's or so ( it was before the internet so I sort of lost track). I am thinking I might need to get back in to it - at least going back the last 3 seasons (and then pick up stuff as I am able to afford it).

If you want to get an idea about putting together lines/ defense combos from the actual teams -this is the one game to get.

I have to dig it out again some day... my only regret is that I never got 1982-83 -so no Secord-Savard-Larmer from Larmer's RoY season and Secord's 50+ goal season.

.. and while I'm at it ..

The Denis Savard tribute from the UC awhile ago. (I was just going to try looking for that shorthanded goal that he scored against Edmonton where he beat all 5 of the Oilers on the ice (some yutz posted a comment that it looked like Savard never passed ... I suppose that would have made it hard to have gotten all those assists he racked up .. I think he had 87 one season - but am not going to be bothered to look up the exact figure...

Don Cherry is a fucking tool. He is a bigot when it comes to European players as well as French-Canadian players. He is also the king of flip-flopping on his own opinions. He was a great coach but is a terrible annalist.

Anyway...

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GfAFgKzmVA"]Pavel Bure[/ame]

Pavel Bure is the fastest player I have even seen play the game, he was the most exciting player to watch (along with Jagr) growing up. If only he could have stayed healthy.

I doubt Cherry is really meant to be taken completely seriously by anyone -- I figured that was the reason for his wardrobe. . . let alone the commentary. He's said some pretty silly things about America as well...

As for the actual analysis part of Cherry, I think maybe that comes from the different era type of thing - I doubt he can see that (as he is one of those guys that only sees things in black and white ... or at least I think).

Otoh I also like Sam Kinison bits too -so it might just be me.

I do think the tool thing is partly a put on... but take Andy Rooney -some guys get nuttier the older they get (it is something to watch out for...).

how old are ya?

46 ... and just having a cruise around that HockeyDB site I just identified the "donut hole" I had in my following the Blackhawks; 1996-97 through 2006-07 -with the exception of the Brian Sutter years- and I remember now why it was too - I got the idea that Daryl Sutter quit as coach (they called it something different) - because he may have figured the team screwed over his little brother Rich who was on the team at the time. It was sort of a gradual thing too -as I figure the reason Larmer decided to demand a trade was how the team had decided to dump Keenan - and then Sutter too ... good God- the coaches in there and the suck ... Hartsburg, Molleken, Graham (great player - but had no business being hire as a coach), Suhonen (blah),...(At any rate -I decided ti was Pulford being Pulford ... and maybe it was Truthiness... maybe not ... but that was what I felt about it ).

I didn't go for that too much... now that I recall (that and I got involved in other things so I just sort of lost interest). I think hiring Savard as coach worked for me - - but man, there was- I think that 2006-07 season where the third leading scorer on the team was a guy by the name of Jeff Hamilton - I think he had 39 points.

You know - there is no way the team can ever suck to that level again ... or at least not for a long time. Some can call that homerism -- others can call it tasting a whole lot of shit over a whole lot of time -and not too long ago either -- that, frankly ... well - forget it -it stands on its own merit. :)

I'd forgotten all of that... (that and oh- I took a photo of my sticks out in the shed yesterday - will post them sometime -- my Canadien 7001's didn't make the trip - they were all torn up anyways - the one I broke that really hurt was breaking a Jofa/Titan one (forgot the exact model -and I don't even think it has a legal blade -it looks like you could pass a quarter through the spot between the heel and the toe of the blade ... maybe that was why I liked it so well (and now I feel like Sammy Sosa for mentioning it. :D ).
