The cap hasn't even been announced yet. And if it is what it is projected to be, they are already over the cap. They gotta cut people before March 17 to even function as an organization. And there's about 0 chance the Bears are like, "Damnit, Robinson is holding out. If only we held on to Buster Skrine!"

No, but it might make a difference in a player like Hicks. And it will be announced prior to March 17, I would be very surprised if it isn't announced by the end of this week, if not sooner. No reason to slap the tag on him until the very last minute.

Well, it could be harder to get one without him. We have the car. It just needs repair.

It could also be harder since he won't be cheap.

Stop with this! This analogy is inaccurate as shit. Rims are a luxury for a car. Robinson is not a luxury of a GOOD offense. He (or similar talent) is a necessity. You have 8 more days to tag Robinson, you have 16 days until free agency and trading is allowed. If you don't tag Robinson and lose him and then 8 days later you get a QB, then what the hell you gonna do?

We have Mooney and can get a cheaper option in free agency.

Mooney & Cohen isn't a bad duo plus either the extra cap space we can get some help on offensive line.

Cutting Buster Skrine, Jimmy Graham and Bobbie Massie pay for the Allen Robinson II franchise tag by themselves. Three no-brainer cuts. Don't even need to get into the should-they-or-shouldn't-they with Akiem Hicks or Charles Leno Jr., those decisions can be put off until the Bears actually secure upgrades. The Bears have upgrades to Skrine already on the roster, Graham is probably finished and Massie is so bad it should be effortless to replace ihm.

Personally I don't think tagging him is the way to go, but to answer the OP's question with a question, who has been tagged this year?

Deadline is July 15th to get a long term extension. There is zero motivation to tag someone before the deadline.

Those three get you close but not all the way there. Those three clear a net $14.3 mill. Remember that you have to put a league minimum salary back on the books to replace them. And already being over the cap, would need another significant cut in addition to those three.

June 1 cuts of Massie and Skrine gives the Bears 19.9Mil in cap space.

You can kick the extra $4.8 mill can down the road with a 6/1 designation, but you don’t get to realize that math benefit until 6/1. Before then, the team has to treat it as a normal cut.
Don’t forget also that if these 3 are cut that an additional 3 salary’s get added back so that there are 51 contracts counting against the cap. That’s another $2.0 mill add back.
With already being over by several mill, they would have to do other work beside these 3 to tag AR.

I realize how it all works. That can kicking also allows the team to go right up to the cap because they'l get that money 6/1 to sign their draft picks (which could wait until after 6/1). But obviously there will be other moves. They aren't going to clear enough money just for Robinson and then be done.

Also don't bears have some money rolling over from last year? Plus we don't actually know the bears are over. Technically if the cap was like 185 I believe we'd be a couple million under right?

OTC has the Bears at 142K under the cap. Spotrac has the Bears 840K under the cap. Both sites account for the Skrine cut already (non June 1st designation). Both have rollover calculated in as well but it looks like OTC has the estimated cap at 183M and Spotrac at 185M.

So all that being said. Getting a an like Wilson or Watson AND Robinson seems like a stretch. Either have to gut the team or do some major restructuring. May as well leverage future picks for a rookie qb and save some money foe the rest of team.
