I still like RBI. and thank you for the flowers.

I'm fine with people slowly making the transition to things like OBP and OPS and VORP and whatnot, because I really do understand why people like the things like the triple crown stats so much. However, RBI's have no business being talked about in any capacity ever again. They are, quite possibly, the worst baseball statistic ever.

What would be better in it's place? Or what do you think works better?

Anything. EqA, VORP, WAR, ISO, pretty much anything. RBI is such a bad measuring device.

RBI is way too dependent on whats happening around you, what the rest of your team is doing so it struggles in telling an individual story about a player.

Exactly. Obviously it tells you if a player is or isn't driving in runners when he comes up (though it isn't rate-based or viewed relative to league-average/replacement level, so there is little to no context that goes along with it), but it fails miserably when used to separate the wheat from the chaff, as it were.

Most directly, SLG. The more bases you earn per hit, the more likely you are to drive in runs. RBI has very little to do with being a good hitter, and very much to do with the batters ahead of you being good hitters.

But at the same time can't it important just because of that? If you're surrounded by incompetent hitters. If people are rarely on base and you're still driving in 90+ runs.

That would be an extreme case, and doesn't outweigh the possibility of RBI punishing a good hitter surrounded by crappy ones.

Yea, how can this team that is only 2 GB possibly win this division :dunno:

Too bad they don't have any more games against the NL to shock and propel themselves back into the race. With what they have, you can rest assured they will fall back to near double digit games behind.
