I just sent a rich entitled asshole to find another company to do his bidding today. I am too old to work harder and add stress just to score a job anymore. Saying no is freedom, particularly if you sense grief if you say yes.

Anyone else have zero problems sending troublesome potential clients packing?

No. No problem at all.

A consultant told us years ago, you need to fire some of your clients regularly.

Cliff Clavin would call it “thinning the herd”. ?

Edit: when I worked in public accounting, we had a client that was not ready when we were to start field work, always tried to negotiate down the bill, and was generally a pain in the ass.

The partner told the client bluntly “you are not an A client“, and they immediately changed. Most importantly they paid more and were happy to do so.

I have always been the type of person that will treat you respectfully until you've given me a reason otherwise. I'll go above and beyond to help out respectful clients and do everything I can to make it a positive experience. However, if the client is disrespectful, then it's a quick drop for me to give the minimum effort required to get the job done and nothing more. Either be respectful or get away from me. It just isn't worth the stress and hassle to try to please the "nothing is ever good enough" types.

This guy was a me first type. Inconsiderate of my time, and trying to play me off other companies. Red flag. Walk away politely, and record his info to cut him off at the pass if he calls again in the future.

Client the same as customer? I was in retail grocery for 29 years. If old John were to give young John advice it would be “tell
Mrs./Mr. xxxx to go f#ck themselves at your earliest opportunity “. Sometimes you have to fire a customer.

I forgot what it is you do. Especially for those in the service industry, construction, etc. Hate people who try to play you against your competitors.

In my work, the term client or customer is fitting. Now, I get that one would not call a grocery shopper a client.

Firing customers is an imperative to maintain sanity, and a sense of control and stability.

I suppose you could say I am a contractor, in a way. Design, and create.

Sounds like a contractor to me. When I get work done....regardless of what it is I get three bids and then go with the one that makes me feel the most comfortable during the bidding process. That is more important to me than price. (within reason of course)

I used the term client because in public accounting that’s the equivalent of customer.

Didn’t mean to confuse, but I am referring to the same thing.

The important part being s client is an ongoing customer versus a walk-in you may never see again in retail.

I rarely have to deal with people getting multiple quotes. 90 % or halve of my business comes from referrals.

I get your point though, price is not everything, but it is something.
