I was a union electrician for almost 20 years (IBEW 134). I won't get too stressed over the test.
But having a couple friends still in it, I (and they) wouldn't recommend it. Unless you have commections in the union or a company, work can be spotty. The pay and benefits are good though.
15 years in Local 701 even though it was low voltage. I hated having to work in 134. Was a total pain in the ass
Exactly........and everything in 134 had to be in conduit. Couldn't even run teflon without a special permit. So to add one fucking telephone on the 31st floor of a downtown highrise cost 10 times as much because you had to have an electrician put in conduit first.LOL. Let me guess.. they wouldn't let you even run basic conduit?

701 had the same. Don't know if it still exists. The union needs the money though to donate to the IL Dems.
Heck, our union dues had a built-in donation to the Democratic party. I don't mean to turn this political, but it's a fact that it already is.

I plan on getting the training with the union, then most likely moving on. IIRC, my cousin was telling me industrial is where it's at. He told me what to learn, but I was more interested in the test and getting a leg up there first.
That's fucked up. Everybody has to get a piece. It's a shame what's happened to unions in this country.
Lol there's a lot wrong with this post. Elevator operators are typically injured/former tradesmen. Also they make much more than 40 an hour.701 had the same. Don't know if it still exists.
I used to marvel at getting on the service elevator to find the fat slob sitting in his chair with his newspaper getting paid 40 dollars an hour to punch elevator buttons all day. Then if you didn't have your union card on you he would throw you out of the elevator.
Ahhhhh...the good ole times.
Industrial is really good to get into. Unless you know a contractor though, it's tough to pick what job they send you to. Learning programmable controllers is a great skill to have if you have a change to take classes for it.
They made 40 an hour in 1989. Yeah........I can distinctly remember them talking about their "injuries" lol.Lol there's a lot wrong with this post. Elevator operators are typically injured/former tradesmen. Also they make much more than 40 an hour.
Oh right, I guess that would make sense for 1989.They made 40 an hour in 1989. Yeah........I can distinctly remember them talking about their "injuries" lol.
