I moved to Plainfield in 99, for less than a year before moving back to Chicago. Almost a decade later, and still there were constant reminders of it from the people in the area. But to be honest, you would never know. Plainfield bounced back somewhat quick, which is very impressive. People come together when tragedy strikes.
Yep. My girlfriend lives there and Ill ask and it seems many residents know of the event. I've been to the memorial a few times and find myself still amazed by the event.

A historical tornado not far from my home. Still creeps me out driving around Plainfield thinking of what happened that day.

Mind you this is 24 years later and people my age know of it.

I studied meteorology as much as possible in H.S, grew up near Bolingbrook and would go out driving whenever I saw the radar light up. Back then it was mostly farmland, made it easy to spot funnel clouds. The Plainfield disaster I just happened to be in the way of. The only means of tracking it was via the weather channel on cable television, as of course there was no internet. There was no doppler radar system in place either, only the military had the technology in use. To make matters worse, it was rain wrapped so even a trained spotter could not see any tornado.

There was no warning. In fact, the Plainfield disaster is what caused the government to institute nationwide doppler radar systems for the NOAA/public use.

Check out this insane footage, they anchor the vehicle down...but still.

How bad was it in Joliet? New lenox was fine from my understanding, but if it kept going would've hit us while we were living round there.

I did not know it was rain wrapped. From my understanding the path itself isn't viewable due to all subdivisions taking over the actual area, yes?

Do you know the width of it? I've read conflicting reports. I just hope not to be in Plainfield when they get the next f-5. Apparently they are due!

It was devastating and weird, but there are native americans facing tornadoes and blizzards every fucking year and nobody cares about them because they aren't black or you right?

1/2 mile wide, 16 mile path, I was near downtown Joliet off Rte.53...about 3 miles due south of the apartment complex shown in below vid. The storm rapidly lost intensity as it continued SE towards nw Ind. Nah, there were very few subdivisions in that area 25 years ago. Joliet itself didn't receive all that much damage, only exception was near the Joliet mall...way west of town.

Hard to believe this was 25 years ago today. Anyone else have any personal stories from that day?

I was alive too, but too young to help you with your report.

Only natural disasters I've been through in memory were 2 tornadoes, 1 blizzard, and 1 earthquake.

Both tornadoes happened when I was a really young kid living in Cheyenne. 1 was minor--we just went to the basement and nothing got damaged near us. The other was pretty bad--I think it was an F4. Golfball-sized hail and the streets were flooded enough that they looked like rivers. Luckily we lived on a hill and our house was fine--our neighbors were not so lucky.

The Blizzard again happened in Cheyenne--about 7-8' of snow got dumped on us. Shut down the town for a couple of days. I remember my dad was pretty much contantly on the roof trying to clear it to prevent it's collapse.

The earthquake (at least, the one that actually did any damage) was the 6.8 Nisqually quake in 2001. A lot of old buildings in seattle took damage--as well as the Starbucks headquarters building since some asshole apparently wanted it doen in brick rather than an earthquake resistant material.

The 2 honorable mentions were the Chicago Blizzard of '79 (i was *just* born at the time), and hearing plenty of stores from people I know that were alive and living in the PacNW in 1980 when Mt. St Helens went up (I was living in Chicago at the time).

I don't fake tan until I'm the Oompa-loompa shade of orange, nor do I "even lift, bro?"--Ergo, I'm not a douchebag. Next time get your insults straight before opening your cockholster and embarassing yourself yet again.

I live close to Plainfield. My girl lives there and whenever I drive through downtown plainfield I'm always somehwat creeped out by the 1990 plainfield tornado. F-5. Hit over 300 MPH and killed nearly 30 people.

Any of my brahs on here remember this storm, have any stories, etc, etc. I've always loved storms/intrigued by tornados.

I've talked to people and my parents remember it vividly. Leaving Orland Park my Mom swears she never felt such a hot and muggy day as today 25 years ago. Creepy shit
