Not to champion the 6 almost 7 Year old $100 E5 2678 V3, cause im not personally interested in that chip. IDK if anyone here would be. However when I said it just happens to game, I forgot to leave some examples. Last words on this specific CPU

Here are some 1080P-4K results vs a Ryzen 5 5600x, a $300 CPU. Does a CPU really matter much when youre rocking a $100K GPU though? Sure bottlenecking etc but you get what Im saying. Productivity/4k Gaming is where its at for these budget CPUs. I mean 100 plus FPS @ 1080P is still suffice right?

I watch this guy sometimes. English is not his first language, so dont mind his robotic English. He usually does a Russian version of the video too, if thats your thing.

Why wait? Do it right meow.

Linux Mint is a great place to start for those that aren't familiar. Nice easy setup, runs well on crap hardware (as long as it's 64-bit) and it's an Ubuntu offshoot so there's a ton of support out there.

There's three desktop interfaces available. I've always been an Xfce fan, but Cinnamon has grown on me.

If you've got an older PC collecting dust, give it a try... srsly.

I've been using xfce for almost 20 years, I can't move away from it. Since it's GTK, and if you're willing, most anything needed from MATE, Budgie, Cinnamon, Gnome proper, Enlightenment, etc can be worked in and then maintained as long as the user pleases.

People say, oh it's 'light' and should be more for low-mid hardware. Phooey! My main rig is a dual SP3 epyc server with 512gb of ram.... guess what I don't want running away with my resources? Yeah, the WM/DE. Especially since 99% of it is hidden as soon as you start launching anything that takes up real estate. Just because you have the power to run Plasma with every bell and whistle enabled doesn't mean you need to. I like playing in Plasma once in a while too, so no hate there.

XFCE is not only a starting point, it's a finishing point too in my book. Same with Mint, you really don't need to do much more. At some point you just don't want to be tinkering *all the time*, and Mint makes that possible. The Mint team is VERY Python heavy for their applets, but you can learn to swap that out over time for faster and more feature rich applications if needed. That's the power of the GTK compliance :) I setup everyone in my family on Mint XFCE, never get any complaints about the OS itself, maybe some missing software. Since I run a lot of arch, I tried the same thing with Manjaro with XFCE(which is the easy mode arch, like Mint is for Ubuntu), and it's never more than a short term success. The whole Ubuntu maintenance stack for Mint, Elementary, Zorin, or any of the heavily developed OSes is just far too mature for user and developer simplicity.

So yerps. TL;DR

XFCE and Mint are always excellent recommendations. If you can't get that running and customized to your liking, Linux is, and likely will never be for you. And if you're just lazy and don't want to constantly be dicking with the OS and updates breaking things, Mint can do that too, better than anything from the Pirates of Silicon Valley.

Seems MS is starting to backtrack ever so slightly.

According to their blog, they are looking into 7th gen intels and 1 gen ryzens now. No update or news on any CPUS before that. As it still stands though, something like a Ryzen Threadripper 1920X isnt good enough. haha

"As we release to Windows Insiders and partner with our OEMs, we will test to identify devices running on Intel 7th generation and AMD Zen 1 that may meet our principles."

You think its bad now. Imagine the amount of E waste thats going to be dumped on some destitute African country post 2025 if MS limits hardware.

The left should be outraged.

The used parts market pre 2017 is going to die, unless millions upon millions switch to Linux. Poor/er countries from around the world will probably adopt it. Sure theres a retro scene for aging parts, but thats small.

Im sure someone will crack the Final release of Win 11 though. That would help the pre 2017 used market some and lessen the mass migration to linux.

Come 2025, If you want WIN 11 on a budget, buying a used Ryzen 2600 combo will be dirt cheap then. I mean its pretty cheap now used, but thats not the point. If they do open it up to Ryzen 1, thats even cheaper as is, I can only imagine prices in 2025. Once again though, not the point!

Micro$oft Has now removed the tool that checks to see if your system is compatible. The same app in the link I posted at the begging of this thread. That app on MS page now just says coming soon. HAHAHA. I take it they didnt like people actually using it and discovering their systems arent compatible.

MS is spouting securtiy this and that. VBS????

VBS requires the Windows hypervisor, which is only supported on 64-bit IA processors with virtualization extensions, including Intel VT-X.

UM, hey, like my CPU is 3rd gen and has VT-x, Vt-d, EPT, TXT , and Skeet fucking Skeet.

All that to run Zork I?

if you're just lazy and don't want to constantly be dicking with the OS and updates breaking things

Convenience is a thing. I mean having to mess with my set up is one thing. If I cant figure it out, google the issue right?

Researching Linux, which Im doing and seeing struggles with just a printer is a thing too I see. I cant imagine the lady of the house or my youngins figuring that out. Maybe in a few years when the KIDS are older and want to be PC gamers.

Having to be around for the old lady is another issue for sure. Refuses to search for answers 99% of the time, the 1% she does try, she still doesnt get it. SShe still often forgets how to export a file as a PDF in libreoffice, even though Ive shown her 1000 times. Even just rebooting the router, yeah right. She has to rely on the expertise of the youngest in the house for that - a 7 yr old...

Im not always home. So what will happen is, Ill switch to Linux and I will still have to buy newer Hardware capable of WIN 11 for the wife and kids.
