Know when to hold em..know when to fold em.

Make sure to walk away, when the dealing's done.
Incorrect . .

If you're gonna play the game, boy, ya gotta learn to play it right.

You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em

Know when to walk away and know when to run

You never count your money when you're sitting at the table

There'll be time enough for counting when the dealing's done.

There is sooooo much wrong with all that song.

There is no "way" to play it right. Play it any way you can to win, right or wrong.

Knowing when the other guy will fold is more important to know than knowing when you should.

Always know how much money you have. And always know about how much money everybody else has.

And, if the dealer is done before you are then you should know exactly how much money you have. You won it all.

(the last line in the song; If you can make it to your car without getting stabbed, you won)

I play 3-4 times a month and for several summers my girlfriend (now wife) and best buddy left Colorado during summer break at college to live and play cards in Vegas. Never had a job except crushing the mirage and MGM until 500 A.M.

Paid for school and rent. I love it, but now I can only handle it in small doses-no longer than four hours at a time.

Yes.

I had posiition on him, the best hand preflop and fantastic pot odds against anything but aces, kings or queens. His ace-jack was a totally shitty hand and he should have folded like everybody else did after the little raises. The 'math' says I would beat him better than 9 out of 10 times.

I should mention that I was the chip boss at the table going into the break; the Ace-Jack guy was brand new, sitting at my right (with slightly more chips as it turned out), when we returned from the break.

My pocket jacks were the first hand of the second round, and he busted me with only three outs left in the deck. He just "happened" to hit two of them FIRST off, and then rubbed a Jack in my face.

The odds of that happening...never mind that he was the only guy with more chips than me at the table, that I had never seen before that first hand. I still LMAO just thinking about it.
It was an "Atlantic City Life Lesson" for free; but then I was never very good at math anyway, so what do I know?

(a hint about good poker dealers, for those that care; the properties of Monopoly are named after Atlantic City streets for a reason)

Yeah, didn't mean to imply it was a bad play. And that shit is crazy.

Last weekend I was at a house game and this fuckin idiot beat me on the river twice. Both times he didn't have shit until the river and I knew it. I was trying to push him out with big bets and he kept checking like a moron and then got me on the river. The second time, I had 2 pair on the flop and I was trying to take this other drunk guys money and got him all in... and this **** chump stayed in with jack shit and hit a straight on the river. I was so mad.

It sucks to play against people that don't know what the **** they are doing cause they make such wild bets and will chase garbage.

Good advice from Brett!

I used to play way too much online, to the point where it did consume me. My biggest problem was that I won 5G's in my very first online tourney, I fucking chased that winning feeling for 2 years ... I haven't played online for well over 5 years now, but I do like a live in person game however. I'm not saying online is rigged or anything, but the bad beats that I went through were goddamn outrages.

The random number generator is a myth. Online poker is an unregulated mess. (at least Vegas will give you a free drink and a show)

Anybody watching the other players at a live table is missing the most important show. The dealer is the only person controlling the outcome of the hand, if it comes to a showdown.

If it's a friendly game at home then some probably won't know how to shuffle the cards without showing some. If they deal cards for a living (like at a casino) then they know how to peel 'em off the bottom.

The math of Hold 'em.

Q-7 off suit is the middle value hand; suited increases it's average slightly.

7-2 off suit is the worst value, and AA is the best starting. Buy into preflop pots accordingly.

+/- postiion, divided by pot odds (carry the number of hands involved in a potential show down) = Fold/Check/Raise/All in

Anyone interested in playing poker should learn about shill rules, and then learn how to identify them. Some States even allow shills in tourny play.
Never mind identifying the fish, look around for the house sharks.

They really don't care if they win or lose; they increase the house rake/odds either way.

Online seems so shady. Just way too easy to rip people off by tag teaming. Plus you lose the one on one which is why in general, the online pros make bad IRL pros.

Give me those guys all day long. In the long run they lose.

True in the long run they will go broke. But in the context of one smallish tournament, they can be maddening if their luck holds long enough. Especially if there is a bunch of em.

Totally agree, but even in tournaments, those guys almost always lose to the veteran player.

any tricks or strategies you're willing to share?

I used to play hard core. Online if they check really quick and then all of a sudden start taking their time on the turn and river, they are bluffing. So they get their 2 cards and auto check(you can tell because it's instant when it's their turn) then the flop comes and it's auto checked again. Then all of a sudden they take their time and put out a Special person bet- that's a bluff

Just got back from Vegas, spent a week visiting family who live there.

Put a good seven hour session in at the rio. Older brother played in the kickoff tourney for Casino employees, finished 200th out of over 900-no money finish but he played for a while.

What a scene. I've visited the WSOP several times over the past decade and every time I go I am amazed at the action and the setup. Tons of new dealers but it's not bad enough to spoil the action. If you play tight-aggressive, it's hard to go wrong. Half the players are trying to double and triple up so they can have enough for a tourney entry, the other half are guys who got busted from the tourney and are steaming.

I saw down at a 1-3 NLH table with 100. Turned it into 250 in about two hours and hopped over to a 2-5 NLH table. Over 4K on the table. Huge bets. 2-5 game is serious. By making some tough reraise all ins I turned my original 100 into 1100 in about five hours. Took a dinner break and didn't come back. Really wanted to parlay the entire amount into the 5-10 game. Those games had well over 10K on the table and while the min buy in was 500, not one player at any table in any position had less than 1500 in front of them. Maybe next year.

Say what you will about the WSOP and all the drama that goes into it, it's THE poker scene of the year.
