Woke up Wednesday, Had a little discomfort in/under my left shoulder. Thought I slept on it funny, which would not be that hard to figure out as I have been sleeping on the couch the last few weeks. Popped a few Advil, off to work I went. The pain was there, but not a big deal, few more pain pills through the day and I was fine, it didn't get worse, wasn't that noticeable, it was just "there".

Thursday woke up, this time it was a little worse, but still not terrible. Repeated with two Advil in the morning, went to work. By noon, it had proceeded to get bad enough that I called the Dr. made an appointment for the next day. Things started to get pretty intense by the time it was time to go home. Driving was a *****, for some reason the Pain qot 10X worse when sitting. I could get some comfort standing and slowly pacing around.

Come to find out, (after I got home) not only is sitting not an option, but laying down is even worse. So I spent the rest of that afternoon, and all night, pacing/standing. The SO (significant other) gave me a ride to the Dr. because at the time of my appointment, I had been up 32 hours. Not to mention the pain just riding (sitting) put me in. By this time I can't hold my head straight up and the pain is going down my arm, the same arm I had issues with a few weeks ago.

Get to Doctor, pace around the waiting room, get in to see Dr., blood pressure is up, but they say this is to be expected when under pain and no sleep. Answer all his questions ( a little more detail then I have here, but not alot). He dopes a series of grip tests, and yup, I have lost grip strength in my right side. But he is pretty sure it is in my back/neck, not my shoulder were the pain first started. I find this hard to believe, as I have never had back problems in my life, and have not done anything recently like heavy lifting in which I noticed any twinge. I was pretty convinced it was my shoulder (but what do I know).

so he prescribes some Hydrocodone and prednisone, and I was like cool, go home and pop some of these and get some sleep. Well yeah, that didn't happen, the pain pills barely take the edge off.

So here it is sunday, popping these things like candy, and I have managed to sleep 3 times for maybe 2-3 hours each time. The pain seems to move around, sometimes it is in shoulder, sometimes in arm/elbow, sometimes in hand. X-rays tomorrow I guess.

I must admit, I used to think the majority of the people that were crying about back pain were just a bunch of pussies. Man, was I wrong. Sorry for rambling, but I'm a little loopy atm between the codeine and the lack of sleep.

There was a post about this last week. Your's sounds bad though, I had a hernia a couple years ago, feels liked you've been kicked in the nuts with a jackhammer, hard to walk and stand up straight. Tried a few of the hydrocodones at first...nothing, I just stopped them, no help other than a cloudy hazy feeling.

yeah except my problem is I can't sit down or lay down, standing up and pacing real slow, is all the relief I get. Were you able to sleep?

Yes, if I don't get 7 or 8 a night...somewhat miserable, going on that little sleep you're getting is rough.

Hey man, wanna throw this out cause I was having problems with my sciatic for a couple years. Long story short, I found out that my nerve was being pinched against bone by a small muscle that was spasming - basically was stuck at full contraction and pressing the nerve against underlying bone.

I found out that this is the case in most nerve issues that don't involve a traumatic event (car crash or whatever). Its usually not from bone to bone pinching. The muscle spasm can result from a lot of things including stress, repetitive motion strain/injury, sitting all day, sleeping in a position that strains that muscle...

The thing is that when the problem is related to a muscle, resting is not the right treatment. Sitting or laying around all day make it worse. Rather, you need to be active with low impact stuff.

And the the number one treatment, the thing that finally solved the issue for me, was therapeutic massage. Therapeutic massage is an actual thing. Like practiced in hospitals and shit. If you find a person, you can go to them and tell them you are having nerve problems from muscle spasms and they will go to work on that muscle and get it to release. For me, that shit was like instant relief.

Oh, also, you have one set of nerves running from your spinal cord to your fingers. But the pinch is probably in your shoulder area or in your back.

If you start googling nerve problems, they almost always lead you to spinal compression and pinches between vertebra but these are almost always misdiagnosis for people that have not had a recent trauma

Yeah a lot of that is referred pain from the spine. I had piriformis syndrome which is from the sciatic nerve. Only thing that helped was butt massages (srs) and 6 weeks of pt. Good luck.

that is literally the same thing I dealt with. straight up, spasming piriformis.

took about a year before I figured it out. I had to self diagnose cause, maybe it was bad luck, but the doctors I went to acted like back pain or sciatic pain was some giant mystery and all they know how to do is surgery or pain pills

Hey, I'm the one who started the thread a week or so ago. Different but similar issue. Ice, stretching, and a therapeutic massage helped a ton. Mine was caused by muscular issues pushing down on my ulnar nerve. So getting the inflammation down around the problem area helped out a bunch.

Massage bro

Start searching Groupon for a deal. I go to a place in royal oak called live well massage and chiropractor. Insurance might pay for it also if you don’t have obama shitcare. Lisa and Samantha do great jobs rehabbing my lower back and neck pains. They told me most of my shoulder issues were neck issues. They also taught me some stretches.

Muscle issues use heat pad ligament issues ice it

Another thing that has helped me is acupuncture but it doesn’t fix issues long term. Just a temporary relief

I didn’t want to go down the road to popping pills I’ve seen friends get hooked on that shit and one died. It does get costly doing all this but living normal is worth it

I here you on the pill popping, and I am not one to take pain meds unless I need them. Typically I have a pretty high pain tolerance (well except a toothache), but this has brought me to my knees. The main reason for the meds is to get some sleep, the not being able to sit or lay down is a real pita.

Sleeping on the couch is bad. Also, the piriformis can indeed be a troublesome bugger

Doc told me to avoid heating pads. Said that it would make it feel better temporarily, but he brings more blood flow to the area, which increases inflammation.

Thanks, your kinda saying what I was thinking it was, Dr. seems not to think so? Yours make sense, and this just showed up out of nowhere, no traumatic incidences at all. Although I just went through a bought of celulitis in the same arm, which seems awfully coincidental. That was just weird though, no real pain involved.

Massage sounds great, but ATM I don't want anyone touching the area, just makes the pain flair up and then it takes me 45 minutes slowly pacing and moving my arms in a slow circle, rotating my shoulders, etc (all very slowly mind you), to get it to settle down. Heating pad is a PITA trying to use when standing, so is ice, and I don't like anything touching the area atm. A loooong hot shower feels good, but then I have to get out and dry off, put clothes on, and all that puts me back to square one, lol.

I tried one of those home medics neck massager's, and that was a no go. It would be nice to get it to the point I could let someone massage the area, or do you just have to soldier through the massage, and it gets better after a while?

This getting old shit sucks, never had these issues when younger.

Been dealing with a herniated disk on my left side which is causing pinched nerves in my L3 and L4 Worst thing I have ever had in my life. Just got my second steroid shot into my spine. It is helping a ton. At one point, I had to lift myself off everything. I couldnt just stand up. It was painful and annoying and even the little things were difficult to do. Im hoping this fixes where I can start to heal it and strengthen it.
