Elbow pads are key because when you fall you will try to brace yourself and anyone here who has ice skated knows you will fall on your elbows and it will HURT!

Knee pads, too.

I played hockey from age 6 to 15 and started up again 31 years later at 46.

To get back into playing, I started going to public skating sessions at a local rink and I fell on my knees a few times and my shins were sore as hell.

Wear baggy pants and slip some knee pads over your shins. You won't regret it.

I live in Downers Grove near the 7 Bridges ice rink but have never been there. My wife suggested I start there. I want to get knee pads as well for when I fall but the wife said that will look stupid. A couple people here have mentioned inline skating - what is that - is that roller blades?

See my prior post. Baggy pants and knee pads will save you lots of grief and knee pain.

The thing that prompted me wanting to learn this is being tired of going to the STH party at Navy Pier and just watching from the sidelines as everyone skates around. Since the party will be at Navy Pier for the foreseeable future I want to join the action and not just be a spectator. I like the knee pad under the pants thing - won't be so embarrasing that way. I wish they had butt pads as well for when I fall on my ass

The STH party is what prompted me to get out there and skate for the first time in my life 5 years ago (back when it was at the UC), and boy do I still suck but love doing it. I can't stop for shit, only turn fast going counterclockwise, and my left leg won't do what I want it to do but love being out there and gliding along. I suppose if I skated more than a couple times a year I'd get better by default, and I really have no excuse as there's an outdoor rink literally 1/2 a block from my house. So get your ass to 7 Bridges and get after it.

My favorite teams
  1. Portland Timbers
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
I've been skating off and on for so long I can't make too much headway. The thing that hurts is hat moving from the Seattle area, I went from one kickas rink that had very good hours to having the closets one not having decent hours to skate and practice.

Right now about where I'm at it i can go pretty well and turn somewhat well even if I look worse than Culli, Sopel, and Boynton on the ice, and am trying to learn to stop without using the boards or a chain of slow-moving yuppies crowding the ice, still a long way to go though.

My advice: loose clothing and pads help. The last time I fell was when i had a choice--either hitting the ice and slamming into the boards or hitting my fiancee into the boards like Ovie did on Campbell. Other that that I haven't biffed it much, and when i did, i wish i had pads.

Oh, and try to get your own skates. Hockeygiant.com usually has some good pairs for cheap. Even if you're using some ancient CCM Black Tacks like me, they are much better than the ones the rinks have.

I can't skate worth the shits anymore. In fact I suck so bad that I have mastered the skill of running on ice. It's really not that hard. Not sure why ice skates were ever freaking needed to be honest. Think it was just another ploy by white folks to keep darky from having fun too.

Who's next on my list of those to offend? I am looking at you slant eyes!!! And you are looking at me...in panoramic.

Yes but there is a strip joint down the street from there. So you know play some hockey, see some boobies. Complain you are sore and tired the next day at work

Yeah I misunderstood my nephew and he didnt have the money Tuesday so we instead are going this Tuesday, which is better so I can wash my pads and get the spiders out of them.
