Crossfit.

I'll second this. I haven't been to a crossfit gym but I've done a bunch of the workouts on my own. The routine is brutal and awesome. I've been looking into gyms recently and decided to check prices of some crossfit gyms in my area. Holy shit are they expensive. It wouldn't be so bad if you only went once a week and worked out at home or another gym the rest of the time but to make it your main gym is crazy

I am trying the "Stop drinking pop/soda" idea.... got iced tea at lunch instead of pop and drank iced tea at home, though it was the canned Brisk stuff, so it probably also needs to be cut out due to sugar content.

Yea, that's just as bad as soda. Have you considered crystal light?

Tried it before, wasn't a big fan.

I figure I will go for the plain non-sugared Ice Teas or just water.

Seriously considering it. I've gained way too much weight in the past few years, and though I re-lost close to half, I've had an extremely difficult time eating right and exercising consistently as I once did. I figured if I could do something to kickstart my eating habits I'd be able to make a run at it from there. So, anyone tried it? Does it help?

This is something I have struggled with in the past. What I've found is best is to compromise and figure out what you can live with and without as this has to be be a lifestyle change not a diet or, it won't work. For instance I work out regularly now 4-5 times a week at the gym and have been eating Healthy Choice Steamers for over 4 or 5 months now at work through the week, I have 4 steamer meals at work which comes too about 1100-1200 calories, I then go work out after work and then finish off with a light dinner and I get my 5 small meals a day, I have never felt better in my life and I am dropping the weight like crazy.

Weekends are my time to eat what I want, I don't go crazy but I might order out once or twice and I also completely cut all soda in my diet which has also helped.

Edit: I like soda but I found it directly contributed to my acid reflux and I noticed that when I would not drink any throughout the day I would not get heart burn and could eat foods I used to think were the cause of my heartburn. So for me it became easy to drop the soda now, as in the past I just tried to drop it because I knew it wasn't good for me but much like smoking, It's not easy to drop something you like.

I use to hate tea, but I grew to like it, seems to be just like beer. Now I drink really strong teas and it doesn't phase me what so ever. Kicking the sugar habit is difficult. I still struggle since my office has a cube full of candy that is up for grabs whenever. The key though is if you can buy it, simply don't buy it. Its more difficult when its given to you for "free".

Yeah, I know what it takes. I've done it before, but part of the main problem is my schedule is so sporadic so I'm never able to catch that groove. I started a new job and since I'm still part-time I'll get home at 3 one day and 8 the next, then 5 the day after. Plus I'm out the door by 830 each morning. When I was working out and cooking everyday, my schedule was a set 8-4. Made it easy to get into a rhythm. Then I went to midnights which fucked me up royal, and now this schedule which isn't set so it fucks me up, though not as bad. It's also more physical, so I've lost some weight. Once I go full time when I know I have a lunch break in there, it will really help me set my eating schedule. After that everything falls into place.

I hear you about soda, that shit is killer man. I think the first week was rough, but it was worth it. I cut it out almost completely. I'll drink coke with liquor in it, and I still love root beer and creme soda, but I don't go full blown on that shit like I used to. I've been healthier for it and it's been about 6-7 years running now, probably more. I drink mostly water, juice, and milk. Even the juice I'm looking into getting my own juicer to cut out any sugar there.

I'm not much into tea. Cold, hot, sweetened, or otherwise.

I personally went straight to water. It takes a bit to get used to, but after a week to two weeks, it becomes the most refreshing beverage at all times, but especially first thing in the morning or any time you feel the slightest dehydration.

I break it down like this: I pay $130/month and I can go anytime I want. When I talk to people who have gone the personal trainer route, they pay $40 for 1 time a week. So I figure I'm saving $30 provided I go a lot. The only days I haven't gone this month are the two Sundays in February, so it's worth the money.

Although this week has been brutal.

Is that just for you or for you and someone else? That's still quite a bit of money. I hate paying for stuff that I can do myself. When we buy a house I'm immediately starting to build a gym in the basement so I don't have to pay a gym fee ever again. I think I would be OK with going to a crossfit gym every once in a while though. Just for a little human interaction. And to check out the fit chicks

Just for me. It's been my one extravagance since getting into minimalism (though admittedly, that is probably going against it). There's nothing wrong with trying it yourself, I did that for awhile. A lot of places probably do three days a week and punch cards. My place I think does $90 for three days a week if you sign for 6 months, but they don't do punch cards. No matter what though, I imagine any place you look to go to is going to put you through introductory courses to make sure your form is right.

Oh, and make sure they are bumper plates.

Fair point. Maybe I just don't fully understand the nutrisystem, system.

Haha, I don't expect their meals to be gourmet. Im just saying that if you make your own food with fresh ingredients, it will be very appetizing more often than not.

We just got a membership to 24hr fitness yesterday and went for the first time tonight. We got a free session to be evaluated. Just like I thought, I know what I'm doing and my form/posture is great. No, but thank you, random trainer, I can figure this gym stuff out on my own.

I actually hope my girlfriend decides she wants a training routine. She's constantly complaining about how out of shape she's in and I think it will be good for her
