It is a lot.

Even if you crunch the numbers, the amount a person would save on electricity and water(sometimes gas for heating) versus a $500 washer, it's ridiculous. You're better off buying a cheap, well recommended, washer and then throwing a $20 at a manual washer on the side + one of those 5 gallon utility buckets.

This is a great backup solution. I have one and use it when I have a lot of laundry and not a lot of time. Takes about 10 minutes to wash, and of course, you either want to get a wringer or just toss it in, by itself in a spin cycle to lessen the dampness. I used to have a hand cranking wringer, but then I got a hanging dryer and just found myself never using the wringer. Some clothes love the hanging drier and will actually dry from a manual wash within a few hours. While things like towels are stupid to dry without a lot of air.

I thought $1K for a washer was a stretch when my wife wanted it as well. When it was working no problems we could wash nearly twice as much in one load and reduced time spent doing the laundry. I don't think we've recouped the price difference in electricity use yet but the time savings has been nice. I'd do it again, would just try a different brand. The water use is not an issue for me as I have a grandfathered water well and septic system and don't pay for water or sewage. We use grey water from laundry to water part of the lawn most of the time

This thread sucks. My dryer is starting to do odd things and wife informed me today that we are getting a new set. I told her I could put in a new control board but she has no interest in that.

Well, if she didn't spend her laundry days sitting on the thing...

Do NOT under any circumstances buy a Samsung. You will end up regretting it.

Samsung's customer service has been surprisingly good. The part arrived UPS at my door 3 days after the repairman's visit and I was able to schedule the repair appointment 2 days earlier than planned this morning.
