Lol, just wait until the Bears win anything!! LOLOLOLO

I somewhat disagree. 15 years ago the United Center was empty for Hawks games. Soldier Field wasn't empty for Bears games.

The Hawks games were blacked out when they sucked

I knew that excuse was coming.

So what? No one wore jerseys, no one want to the game.

Why?

Because they didn't care.

I like the Blackhawks and watching some games, but it's hilarious when Hawks fans claim they gave a shit 12 years ago and are best fans in NHL.

Uh, no.

Bobby Hull is a piece of shit.

Totally 100% agree.

Have you met him before?

Dude pulled a gun on his kids even, he's a nut.

Was creeping on one of my girl--friends at this local bar a few years back. Creepy as **** lol

It wasn't the same though, man. That's the point that Desperado is missing by a mile and it appears that you're not quite there either.

First off, football is just more popular than hockey in this country. That's a simple fact and a significant part of this conversation.

The Hawks and Bears went straight into the the toilet together around the mid/late 90s. But as a kid who was an active fan of both during that time, I promise you that the Bears were still way more prevalent in my life. I could go to a story and find Bears gear to buy (or beg my parents to buy). The Bears were present around town: I still remember going to autograph signings for Marcus Robinson and Curtis Enis in the late 90s.

There was no such thing for the Blackhawks. You must remember that this was before the Internet. As I got into the sport more and more, I desperately wanted some Hawks gear. There was NONE to be found. I'd go to local sports stores (Sports Authority, Sportmart, etc.) and they simply wouldn't have any Blackhawks stuff there. It was as if the franchise didn't fucking exist.

Even when the Bears sucked, they still had the ability to be a recognizable entity within the Chicago area.

Not only did the Hawks completely **** up on the ice, they were a total PR disaster as well. Absolutely no presence in the outside community. If you were a casual sports fan that wasn't following the team that closely, the Blackhawks never crossed your mind because the team did nothing to remind you.

It's not that fans stopped caring. It's that the organization rendered them invisible in the eye of the sports fans of Chicago.

I found Denis Savard passed out at a urinal standing up with his cheek against the tile wall in the bathroom at The Lantern in Naperville.

No Joke....put him on my shoulder and got him to a cab.

He never thanked me.

Maybe no one here has said it but it's something I've heard a lot of Hawks fans say. Really the only answer for best hockey fans is Montreal. They're assholes but the hockey team means everything to them. The Bell Centre (and the Forum back in the day) is always loud and every game is sold out. They're the Packers fans of the NHL, except Habs fans don't grope the players when they score.

The "why" is actually very, very apparent if you followed the Blackhawks back in the 90s. Seriously. Go do the research. You can start with "Dollar Bill" Wirtz. That should paint a pretty good picture. Look into his handling of Amonte, Belfour, Roenick, etc. as well.

There was a similar story a couple of years back on IHN something about 4 am during Hawks convention he was mad he couldn't order pizza for the group of Hawks fans he was drinking with.

My favorite teams
  1. Portland Timbers
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
Really easy quick/no-cook BBQ sauce:

Ketchup (natural, no HFCS)
Mustard (like about 1/3 of the ketchup)
Liquid Smoke (couple of dashes to taste)
Sriracha (to make it a little spicy)

Not thick like your SBR, but tastes awesome, great for a glaze for your grilled wings - i would recommend constant baste and turn, baste and turn method.

EDIT: Let me know if you want my more advanced recipe - but you may not have all the ingredients on hand.
Not bad...I use something similar for BBQ glaze except, when I'm cooking for myself, I subsuitute out the Sricacha for Dave Insanity Ghost Pepper sauce and apply liberally. **** sauce is good, but can lack the punch I like. :)

It's because in this country (as Dmelt says later) people eschew the sport of hockey for the standing around of gridiron football.

Bobby Hull is a piece of shit.
I think that's something we all can agree on. Regardless of how good he was on the ice, the fact that the 'hawks have an ambassador who was a wifebeater--yet got all flustered with IceCrewGate, speaks volumes.

For someone who spent that time entirely outside of Chicago and in a town that has a pro Basketball team and a junior hockey team, it happened in spades except even by my late Jr high days/high schoopl days I was more and more drawn away from gridiron football. Yeah, I could have seen a bears game on national TV. Seeing anything Blackhawks was even harder with the exception of 1992. What helped in the 90's was that Jr. team (especially since back then you could have 1st level tickets for under $20 making it a prime thing to do for hichschool kids), and you knew most of the kids would have decent NHL careers--like Morrow, Ference, Hossa, Zednik, etc. That helped me get more into it than when I was a young kid living in Chicago proper.

Ultimately though I think it took the death of the owner to really get the 'hawks back into the limelight. I don't think the bears ever will be out of the limelight because this is 'MURICA! with a capital apostrophe and gridiron football is the de facto sport, but I think it's going to take McKaskey dying to invoke any culture change with the bears.
