Placido Polanco got his 2000th hit. While he played for the Cards, I always liked him as a player.

I really would've figured he'd get to 2,000 hits a bit sooner. For his reputation as a pure hitter, he's only hit 200 hits once, and he doesn't walk all that often.

He isn't a great player by any stretch of the imagination. Part of the 200 hit season is that he hasn't played many full seasons. He has never topped 153 games and he only played above 140 games in 5 of his 14 seasons.

Joe Posnanski's latest blog isn't really about baseball but this was amusing:

Joe Blogs: My Daughter's Favorite Sport

I have written before about the time that friends of ours came over with their son, who was just about Elizabeth’s age. They had grown up together. He began telling her about baseball games. He was -- and remains -- an extremely talented young baseball player and Elizabeth asked him what position he played. He said he was a shortstop and a pitcher. And she said, “What kind of pitcher are you? Are you a starter or a closer?”

He asked: “What’s a closer?”

She said: “A closer is someone who comes into the game at the end to finish off the other team.”

He said: “Oh.”

She said: “Of course, managers tend to misuse their best pitchers by turning them into conventional closers, pitching them for one inning at the end of games, often with a two- or three-run lead, when they would be much better suited for high leverage situations earlier in games.”

OK, she said not say that last part. But the rest of it is true.
