In another thread man. You were talking about lebron being the MVP, in here you're saying Rose. Or did I misinterpret what you said?

Where in this thread did I call anybody the MVP? I think you did misinterpret what I said...

I have to remember the thread but you were talking about lebron in a way that it seemed that you felt he was more deserving. You even attacked me for saying he might not win it because he's won the last two already.

That thread.

I said that YOUR reasoning was off. Saying Lebron James is not going to win because he has won two already is not good reasoning. If Lebron deserves it, and there is a good argument that he does...then he should get it. Doesn't matter how many times he has won in the past. That is the point.

That may be true. But I've seen Jordan lose some because he won too many already. 1997 when Karl Malone cried and begged his way to the MVP when Jordan deserved it, 1993 when Barkley won it, I can say he deserved it more than Malone, but still Jordan was the league's best player.

So in some writer's minds, they will sometimes not vote for a guy that has won two in a row. That's the perspective I was coming from. Having been around the writers and voters when I worked the press areas in US Cellular Field and The United Center, I've overheard them say just that.

So my reasoning isn't as off as you might want to think.

Those were lifetime achievement awards for great players. In some writer's minds, what they do is somehow justified, however...not giving Lebron MVP for a third straight year simply because he has won the previous two is flawed thinking...that is my point. I thought it was flawed when it happened to Jordan. And so the same applies now.

I would rather Lebron win the award if he deserves it over Rose getting the award because Lebron won it two times already though Lebron may be more deserving. It is about this year...2010-2011. Rose is contending for it, Lebron is gaining momentum...so we will see what happens...

Sir charles and malone's mvp's ought to have an asterisk next to them stating that they were sick of giving jordan the award.

honestly lebron's the better player that's having the better year. If the bulls have a better record than miami, you can make an earnest argument that rose deserves to be the mvp.

But do you draw a distinction between the "best" and "Most Valuable" Player? Lebron has Wade and Bosh; Rose has Deng, Boozer and/or Noah (but mostly just 2 of the 3). I think the Bulls' record suffers more from the loss of Rose than the Heat's record does from the loss of Lebron. In my mind that makes Rose more "valuable" than Lebron.

Or do you think the MVP should just be renamed the Best Player Award?

Definitely...but using your criteria, look at the Mavs...there is actual evidence that they are a lottery team with Dirk out. Even the Bulls team went from 57 to 55 wins without Jordan...

True. I was just comparing James and Rose. Dirk is definitleey in the discussion. And for that matter where would the Knicks be without Amare?

you could use this criterion to make the same criterion for chris paul. In theory you could use the criterion to argue that a really bad team that centers their team around a good(but not great) basketball player.

I'm not entirely comfortable using that criterion. I'm not sure what a better substitute would be.

If the award is best player then LeBron wins no question, and he'd probably win every year for the next 5+.

But the whole valuable part is the fuzzy bit. Dirk probably has more value to his team this year than anyone in terms of win totals. But really what is the ultimate value in the league? Winning a championship is really the only achievement we value, nobody cares how many games a team wins if some other team is even better. So by that measure of value the award should go to the best player on the best team and Manu is the MVP so far.

I really can't think of any way to define MVP that supports the case for Rose though.

I say Barkley definitely deserved it in 1993. Malone's in 1997, I am not so sure about but he had a brilliant year.

I definitely think, based on what the Bulls have done, with core players missing for long periods, that he is in the conversation. But people who only look at Bulls games and are not seeing what Dirk is doing on a nightly basis, where he is the only option offensively in most cases and he has nobody close to a Boozer on his team....he is having a year comparable to Rose in that sense. He is bearing a great deal of the load for his team.

My point is its not so cut and dry when taking the whole league and looking at it fairly.
