Saw it on ESPN, PTBNL being sent to the Mariners for him. My opinion is why not still young and can be a back up to Fowler.

Great trade, i always liked Jackson from his Tigers days..

Most likely done because of question mark with how long Soler will be out..

Cubs are going to have a pretty good bench in September and hopefully for playoffs

Another big strike out guy, he should fit right in. Seriously, I like this move. Decent hitter, good speed and glove....just a little more depth which also makes me wonder how long Soler is gonna be out.

I also think this about the Cub's recent problems against left handed pitching.

Sounds like a RF bat. Not sure who is the PTNL. Saw Olt was ejected off the 40 man for him.

I'm guessing they toss them Alcantara in a few weeks.

He sucked playing in Seattle. But that park is a pitchers park now. So it is not surprising that his numbers took a plunge from playing with the Tigers.

That said he becomes another CF option that they can look at to see if they want to sign next year. Seeing how he performs in Wriggley and the NL should help weigh his value going into F/A this off season.

Over all it was a smart deal. He becomes a better option over Szczur in the depth chart. Not to mention adding another vet option in the line up vs being weighed too heavy with rookies.

Jackson a FA at years end , it not going to cost the cubs much in a player if at all. .
the deal was player or cash and the 97th IFA slot

One thing for sure is that he's gotta be better than the last Jackson we had.

So out best hitter bats 5th?

Sounds awesome.

Time to drop schwarber down in the order as he's in a major slump

Strongly doubt the PTBNL is anyone that decent even if Alcantara is having a shit year. Cubs need to move some guys on the 40 man. Vogelbach isn't on the 40 man as of yet and doesn't really appear to have a future here(plus AL team). Daury Torrez is another top 30 guy rule 5 eligible as is Jeimer Candelario. Pierce Johnson and Corey Black also are those types but I don't think they are dealing them. Either way, I think the player that's traded will be on this list http://www.thecubreporter.com/book/export/html/3518.

Edit: Also this was posted on espn's sweet spot blog(unrelated to my previous comments). http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/62339/cubs-make-good-depth-pickup-in-austin-jackson

That ESPN one makes me think they might trade Soler and move Bryant to RF. can't hit off speed.

Yeah, it's hard to not like what the Cubs are doing. They've added speed and defense going into a playoff run. Also, they really needed the OF depth as well. Great moves. Just think, not too long ago the Cubs were being criticized for not trying to win......

I think against RHers, he goes back to cogs at 2B..

Jackson can hit RHers ok so he will go to RF

Part of me thinks baez will get majority of his AB against LHers

Be interesting though to see who maddon turns to down the stretch against lefties . .Castro or Baez

My guess Baez will get the call for defensive replacement at 2B for cogs..

Castro will get alot of PH opportunities. .

It will depend on production. If what Baez was doing translates he will get more at bats. If Ajax gets a boost from getting out of Seattle he will get more. If they look over matched they will get less.

CHICAGO -- Javier Baez will be one of four players to be called up by the Cubs on Tuesday when rosters expand, a team spokesperson said after Monday's 13-6 loss.

Outfielder Quintin Berry, as well as pitchers Trevor Cahill and Tsuyoshi Wada will all join Baez on the 40-man roster as the Cubs make their push for the National League's second Wild Card spot. The club has not confirmed the moves.
The moves will come after Chicago traded for Seattle outfielder Austin Jackson earlier in the day, where all players will be eligible for the postseason. Neither Cahill nor Berry is on the 40-man roster at the moment, which means the Cubs would need to make room on Tuesday.

Also said Cahill and Wada to the pen. 2 on the 40 are getting bumped off in these moves

Had to guess it would be 2 from a list of 3. Beeler, Jokisch and Villenuva. Beeler for sure. Other 2 are a toss up.

Why would they bump Villanueva off the 40 man? They literally just DFA'd Olt who after Bryant is the only 3B on the 40 man unless you consider Alcantara/Baez/Russell/Castro 3Bs. Seems far more likely they'd bump pitching as they have 18 position players on the 40 vs 22 pitchers. Beeler and Jokisch make sense but so does Medina. Rosscup as well hasn't exactly been stellar.

Baez has played 3B quite a bit at Iowa so you would have to consider him as a backup in MLB. Villanueva is likely not going to be in the Cubs organization in a few months and these guys are showing a tendency to hold onto as many arms they can. I would not consider him a sacred cow by any means.
