I'm not 100% sure on Illinois law, but if Bedard was only 17 then he was still a minor and needed his parents/guardians to sign for him.

Remember what Jack Johnson's sperm donor and incubator did to him? That's reason enough to wait.

Smart move on all sides waiting until Bedard was a legal adult in the law's eyes before signing his ELC.

I think players have to be 18 or over to sign a contract in the NHL, per the actual NHL regulations.
