Bears 2014 Roster Prediction 1.0

* updated 5/30/14 -- Fixed Briggs to Will, Shea to Sam; Add Chris Williams as Returner, cut mj Jennings.

(Starters listed first. Starting most games, as opposed to Game 1 Starters)

Offense: 23

QB Cutler, Palmer, Fales
HB Forte, Carey, Lynch (2nd guess Ford instead of Lynch)
FB Fiammetta
TE Bennett, Onobun, Rosario,
WR Marshall, Jeffery, Wilson, Weems, Morgan, Chris Williams
LT Bushrod
LG Slauson, Brown
C Garza, De La Puente
RG Long, Britton
RT Mills

Defense: 27

DE Houston, Allen, Young, Bass (2nd guess: Washington instead of Bass)
DT Ferguson, Sutton, Ratliff, Paea, Collins (2nd guess: Izzy instead of Collins)
SLB McClellin, Greene
MLB Williams, Bostic
WLB Briggs, Jones, Senn
CB Tillman, Jennings, Fuller, Frey, Hayden, McManis
SS Mundy, Steltz,
FS Vereen, Conte,

Special Teams: 3

K Gould
P O'Donnell
LS Hartson

NOTES:

  • Hard to know if LS Mannelly will be back.
  • Seems likely we'd keep Jennings or McCray as a 5 Safety, but Chris Williams is Returner, Weems is better ST than Jennings or McCray, and keeping 4 best Safeties is enough.

  • 5 WRs may seem low, but WR ST Ace Hixon is gone, and we are valuing ST players. With pass catching Forte and Bennett, you dont need as many WR. I think Toliver may make a case.

  • RB after Forte and Carey is hard to say... Ford and Draughn are favored, but Lynch adds more offensive dimensions and heaviest/tallest of the 3, maybe strong blocker, I think may be a surprise. I'd like to see Lynch learn to be a placeholder for FG, and be center blocker for punts -- where he could get the ball and be a serious threat to run or pass for a 1st down. Defenses would have to protect the LOS and have less blockers downfield. If Lynch can do full RB duties, no need for Ford. But if tying to keep Ford & Lynch, would have to cut one of Brown (Leno PS), Morgan, Weems, Onobun, Rosario, Collins, Jones, Greene, Senn, Hayden or McMannis.

  • At TE, Rosario adds blocking and Onobun pass threat. I think Onobun will make that step, but who knows. Even with Fiammetta at FB, I still think we require 3 TE.

  • 7 LB? Senn is our ST Ace replacing Costanso. I think Jones, Bostic and Greene will be too valuable to cut, and will add to STs.

  • Cut Izzy? We just drafted a 2nd rd NT & 3rd rd DT, & 2 good run-defending DE, Houston can go inside. The higher value will be for pass rushing DE, I don't think Izzy will beat Bass for that, but who knows. If Izzy is a better DT than Collins, than cut Collins & keep Izzy.

  • Seems Trestman went to a lot of trouble for Chris Williams as are Returner (signing bonus, nabbed from Wash PS), 4.28 40yd speed, good moves, fair developmental WR.

Cut Morgan. Off the field issues. Everyone is forgetting Chris Williams from CFL. Emery raved about his return abilities and his speed in an interview like a month ago. Look him up. "Chris Williams - Hamilton". No way he gets cut unless he completely sucks as a returnee in the pre season but its his job to loose.

You got your "Will" and "Sam" switched...

SLB Briggs, Jones, Senn
MLB Williams, Bostic
WLB McClellin, Greene

DE will be a dogfight for the last spot that you have Bass taking (I hope so too) but that is way up for grabs..

Also at Safety (FS/SS) I think we pick up a late cut veteran player for depth.

If we cut Izzy to keep Collins I will not be happy.

Not only is Izzy a better DT than Collins, he is healthier, can play DE and is a very good special teams player.

Not having Izzy last season hurt this team.

I also think Lynch is destined for the PR.

He cannot block at an NFL level right now and I do not see that changing in the near future.

Umm Briggs is a WLB. Because he lines up behind a LDE which rushes a QB into his blind side. Making that his weak side. Strong side is a LB that lines up behind a LDE that the QB can see coming. It can only switch for a left handed quarterback.

Umm, no.

The WLB lines up on the side of the weak side of the OL-the one without the TE. The SLB lines up on the strong side of the OL-the one with the TE. Their alignment has absolutely nothing to do with whether the QB is left or right-handed.

I hope you are right Windy....I am a big Izzy fan....just like the guy....but I see him as having a similar skill set to Houston (DE/DT - outside/inside capabilities)...maybe it is good to have TWO of em'....?! He rode the bench while in Detroit.....not a good sign...

I believe the Weakside is the side with no TE and is usually the left, strong side is usually the right side where the TE lines up. SLB follows the TE and usually lines up behind the LDE. WLB no TE and usually behind the RDE. Either way I think the OP knows that Briggs is a WLB and just made a typo.

Briggs has always been the Will backer. Sam has been Hillenmeyer/Tinoisamoa/Roach etc, adn McLellin this year.

I think we only cut Izzy if Bass and Washington show flashes again.
