Yes it is. There is no GM in his right mind who would pay jay 16 mil for the privilege of getting him in a trade. The deal would have to be negotiated up front so that jay would join his new team at a heavily discounted rate.

Really? You think Cutler would simply agree to take a 60% pay cut after being traded? In the NFL "restructuring" almost exclusively involves adding years to a contract while converting a portion of the principal into guaranteed money (a bonus) which is then spread out over the course of the longer term of the contract in order to lessen the per-season cap hit. Or, like what Cutler did in order for them to sign Allen (ah, another Despbro love story...), doing the same but without changing the length of the contract -- thus more guaranteed over a longer period of time with a lesser per-annum cap charge. When was the last time a guy agreed to a huge pay cut in order to go to a team that, in all likelihood, wouldn't be a contender anyways? It doesn't happen.

Not necessarrily in this case....he could restructure as part of a trade if it means more than what he would get if he got cut and then resigned.

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago Cubs
  1. Chicago Bulls
  1. Chicago Bears
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
We could agree to pay some of his contract if the pick or player compensation was worthy of it. Not saying that will happen or we get anything. Ji

The bigger story is, if this is true... is not about cutler at all..

its about plan A being put into motion and another QB has been tampered with... and has agreed to come to chicago to play.

or

Perhaps Pace is just going to trade pick/s etc for Romo.

or another QB is being traded for.. Mckraken, Jimmy..

russians needs to hack pace and find out

One way or another, Cutler is going to take a 60-75% pay cut whether he likes it or not. He's not worth 16 mil, and even the Bears know it.

restructuring to reduce pay based on performance happens all the time. The Pats are in the process of doing it to Amendola

Well, all it takes is two teams to show interest to get something in return

As an aside, I still can't believe that the Eagles got a first for Bradford - so you never know what might happen

That is incorrect. Amazingly, due Cliff Stein 'negotiating' the worst contract in sports history, Cutler still has $2M in guaranteed money coming his way. Cutler is due to make $16M this year, $17M in 2018, and subsequent years of $20M and $21.7M (!!).

I think the fact that there is still guaranteed money attached to Cutler's contract, even though its a small amount, is probably enough to turn off potential suitors. If Cutler's new team has to cut him because they can't afford a backup QB making $16M, then the bad PR for giving up a draft choice (presumably) AND also having to take a $2M cap hit would be more trouble than its worth. No GM would want to be in that position.

Cutler's current contract is still too big/"Cliff Steiny" for other GMs to willingly take it. Cutler's contract would have to be completely restructured, as his base salary is still way too high. It would almost make more sense for a GM to do an "RGIII" deal with Cutler...increase the guaranteed money but greatly reduce the base salary...maybe a 2yr/$12M deal with the majority of it being guaranteed. Would Cutler agree to that? Probably not.

I think it's bad PR trading for Cutler and giving up the draft pick WAYYYY more than the 2 million.

It's almost like having Cutler on your team is taboo at this point. I wouldn't be surprised if he is cut and no one signs him.

He does not need a new contract. If the bears have to pay him the 2 milliion, he is free to walk and sign anywhere for whatever he can get. But that is ultimately going to cost the team that takes him more money. It makes sense to do this before the bears pay him the 2 million, but need to cut that check next week. Otherwise he walks for nothing, so you take what you can get. If someone wants him they will give a third or fourth to buy the year by year 12 million dollar deals and not have to compete with anyone for his services.

Why would any team be interested in a trade when everyone knows they will be releasing him?

To guarantee that they get him and he doesn't sign with another team.
