Chicago Bears ‏@ChicagoBears 8m

LM: #Bears will remain a 4-3 base defense in 2014 but will be versatile enough to take advantage of what players do best.

What does that last part mean? An occasional hybrid? Shouldn't every defense take advantage of what players do best?

It means I doubt the Bears draft a 320lb NT.

Basically. It's just keeping options open with player scouting and devlopment. Basically no more having to have a 6'2", 295lb DT, 6'5", 270lb DEs with their hands in the ground, CBs that can play off man and cover 2.

This opens up Emery (a scout turned GM) to go after a 250lb rush LB if he wants. To go after a 320lb DT if he wants. To go after a press man CB if he wants. Without having to teach them new tricks (ala McClellin). Because his defense can stay in 4-3, but have the 250lb player standing on the edge. He can have a space eater on run downs if necessary. He can play press man on 3rd and short and not have an automatic mismatch.

The last part means they're going to do everything within their power to prevent Shea McClellin from busting out of the NFL. Emery is desperate to salvage this draft pick and it's going to eat his ass alive trying to fix him. It's why Emery essentially pulled two relatively obscure 6-3 260 pound pass rushers out of his ass and said "these guys sucked too, but eventually became good and we still think Shea can be just like them.

Never mind that Shea should be like Idonije or Wootton he'll be the next one or two year wonder that earns a big pay day before completely disappearing into obscurity again.

I sorta doubt the Bears go after a NT at least early in the draft, mainly because, if they stick with the " 4-3 " We are missing a lot of pieces, like a lot of bodies, for this base defense right now, without bringing in guys suited for a 3-4, like a 320lb NT.

Why do people think Bears D needed light DL? It demanded speed, I'm sure Richard Seymour would have been welcome if available.

Peppers is huge and fit in fine.

Just curious, you call www.chicagobears.com a propaganda site, but what do you honestly expect them to tell you?

That Sheamus sucks, Emery was wrong there and can't ever draft a good player?

No but the asinine level of biased reporting that comes off the, official, site is nauseating. It's historically a really bad site for its cheerleading.

You know this was the first offseason in a decade that there was some genuine mystery of what the Chicago defense would look like next season.

Thanks for spoiling that two weeks after Super Bowl, Larry.

It means that the 4-3 is the base, but looking at the players on the roster they may be asked to do different things than a traditional 4-3.

Is it Seattle's scheme? No. Is it the Pat's scheme? No.

The truth is at this point without having more than one DT under contract, the DE spot in flux or the starting LB spots figured the coaching staff doesn't know players that will ultimately determine how their 4-3 operates.

Please show me any past history that emery is going to sink the team just to save a draft choice. I would present evidence that he has done the complete opposite.

One can almost hear the dreams of the innumerable 3-4 rubes breaking apart and slipping through their fingers. Savour it. Nothing is so sweet as when the trogolodytes are bashed in the face by the sledgehammer of evidence. Soon they'll decide that they never wanted to move to a 3-4 anyways. Cognitive dissonance, how I love thee.

Peppers is huge and fit in fine.

They wanted quick linemen to generate pressure and create chaos in the backfield, as opposed to having huge linemen who took up double teams and created space for LBs. Tommie Harris filled this role perfectly when he was healthy.

Peppers is just a physical freak that had the entire package.

The best part we're instilling trust in Tucker that he's suddenly going to become an aggressive play caller and that he's going to know the right situations and circumstances to be aggressive and that he's not going to form predictable habits about when he is going to be aggressive. Essentially we're trusting that Tucker will change his entire coaching acumen in one off season....yeah good luck with Tucker trying to reinvent the wheel.

We tried the same bullshit with Mike Martz in year two....the Bears will run the ball more run shotgun more and lessen the seven step drop. Haven't we heard this bullshit all before, only with a different GM and head coach?

Obviously, light typically = quicker off the ball and into the gap. And Lovie had 9 years of history showing what type of DTs he liked. (DEs weren't really in the discussion). Harris, Tank, Melton, Paea, are guys that he helped to draft for his scheme.
