Its kind of a mixed bag. Defense isn't near as good as it used to be - the biggest loss from lovie is the constant loss of gap control - people are leaving their gaps way too much.
However, they still have the turnover mentality, which ends up being a huge equalizer.
You can mitigate the bad defense as long as the offense is able to sustain long drives on the field. That would also be how you contain Brees - never let him see the field.
I think I'll nod along with that assessment, but I do think the arrow is pointing up (save losing Melton, and Tillman's groin and knees sound like nagging injuries that just stay painful and limit sustained pressure... I see that in Pep too, but, maybe he's shaking it off?). I think a huge amount of credit needs to go to Big Ben. The dude really does come through, and takes the pressure like a hit of viagra. The dude just seems to get turned on by getting away, faking guys out, and laying them in nicely. He's impressive.
The Steelers, record aside, are not a joke of a team.
Nor are the Saints and we'd be idiots not to be concerned. But this should be true of all teams we face. Next up, Detroit... and, uh, I'm not sure Brees should be even mentioned till we see what Stafford throws our way.
