Amid widespread speculation that a failure by the Bears to get to the postseason in 2010 will result in a full housecleaning, such an outcome would result in up to two years of free money for new director of player personnel Tim Ruskell. Ruskell said on Friday that his deal "will be for three years."
Of course, the devil may be taking up residence in the details. It's possible, for example, that the contract guarantees only one year of employment, with a team option on years two and three.
Either way, Ruskell's status won't keep the team from making wholesale changes, if ownership decides that wholesale changes are needed.
The timing of the move continues to be confusing, given that published reports indicated in February that Ruskell had a deal in place. Ruskell claimed during his introductory press conference that, apart from sharing background information regarding Seahawks offensive lineman Rob Sims, Ruskell had no involvement with the Bears.
Our guess? Ruskell's contract with Seattle went through the draft, the Seahawks agreed in December to pay him the balance of the money owed, and the Seahawks refused to release him prior to the draft, since he would have carried to Chicago the product of several months of draft preparations bought and paid for by the Seahawks.
