Yeah, it might be the 54th man trick. Did they cut him late enough in the week that he still gets a game check? Abdullah takes Nichols' spot. Next week Abdullah back to the PS, Nichols comes back with a club, Sowell is resigned and never missed a pay check.
Sowell is a vested veteran. His contract for the year was guaranteed from the moment he was on the roster for game 1. If he decides to put the weight back on and go back to being an OL backup somewhere, he can just walk away from this year under a full salary. The only thing he'd lose is another year toward his pension. He may well have an agreement with the Bears to come back in a week or two, but contractually he doesn't have any incentive to do it...
