Bears were right to ditch Brandon Marshall

Brandon Marshall
Brandon Marshall is one of the most talented wide receivers in the NFL today. He’s also a gigantic pain in the ass.
Last season Marshall proved that he can put up numbers no matter who his quarterback is. Marshall posted an incredible 1,502 yards and 14 touchdowns with Ryan Fitzpatrick calling the shots.
The guy he’s always done his best with though is of course Jay Cutler of the Chicago Bears. Brandon Marshall had a solid run with him in Denver early in his career, and during their time together in Chicago he played better than ever. In between 2012 and 2013 Marshall racked up 2,303 yards and scored 23 touchdowns.
A new Bears front office regime thought that Marshall was too expensive to keep around, though. So, last March Ryan Pace traded him to the New York Jets for a fifth round pick.
At the time we thought it was a mistake. Brandon Marshall was simply too good of a commodity to net just a fifth rounder. He was an important part of the Bears’ offense and even if he had to move on, they should have gotten more in return.
Fast forward a year and a half and it’s starting to look like one of Pace’s best moves.

Bears: Madden ranks Chicago last in NFC
Brandon Marshall has all the talent in the world, but he remains a volatile element that can never seem to keep himself in check.
Earlier this week at Jets training camp Marshall took a swing at cornerback Darrelle Revis and had to be separated. When he was asked what happened, Marshall explained that he’d been baited into it, via Fox Sports:
“I beat him two times in a row, and then on the third one, he swung and hit me in the face. I just told him, ‘Don’t ever put your hands in my face again like that.’ And he kind of baited me to do it, and I did it. I kind of went too far, but there’s a thin line between football and being a man…”
Yes indeed there is.
Brandon Marshall has made some progress from the chaos that plagued his early years in the NFL, but the fact that he can be so easily baited by a teammate during a drill in August says a lot about his inherent limitations.
Here’s the thing. Ryan Pace and John Fox are building a team where culture matters as much as the Xs and Os. The dysfunction that reigned during the Marc Trestman and Phil Emery era has to be avoided at all costs. That means wild cards like Marshall and Jeremiah Ratliff need to be expelled from the equation as soon as they represent a threat.
Marshall may have been missed on the field last year with so many injuries at wideout, but in the long run the Bears made the right decision by moving on without him. Removing a liability and getting a fifth round pick in the bargain is now and will always be a solid deal.
