It's too early to make that assessment of "better". I do think Stan did the best he could given the circumstances. Talk to me in November about how good they are.

I think the Hawks have proved that regular season matters insofar as qualifying for the playoffs, but seeding matters little. I don't want our top minute guys to play balls to the wall for 82-games - save it for the playoffs.
In fact, I'd start giving Hossa "senior days" as he gets older.

Yes, I think that two rules need to be amended from the NHL.
The bullshit that leads to Hayes, Reilly....and the cap swelling injury rule allowing you to stack an over cap playoff team. If somebody is out for season, ok....but I don't find pleasure in a Kane/Toews injury allowing us to stack 10,000,000 extra cap at trade deadline and then have everybody for playoffs. I don't think its fair. It nearly backfired on us and is probably at least likely to do so just like free agency would or does to the redskins, toronto maple leafs every year.
But still....it isn't a "fair" rule unless the cap swelling player is to remain out. In my opinion, if you want the "injured" Kane or comparable player back, then salaries should be readjusted so you are under the cap. You shouldn't get to add a player like Vermette to every playoff roster because of the luck of injury timing.

expensive player gets hurt, goes on ltir, you add expensive meat, player comes back. What am I missing?

The rarity of the situation. Tell me how often this situation has occurred? It requires someone to get hurt before the trade deadline (to have playoff impact) then that player to miss all the season until the playoffs begin. It's a blue moon oppertunity that can't be "faked" either by regulations checking.
Just like with the serious injuries of permanent LTIR guys like Pronger/Horton/Savard who would be in severe danger if they played. The league doesn't just accept when you say oh you're doing X, okay. They approve every little deal of trades and contracts picked out together. They would let it be known if they thought a BS use was being pulled.
And the Reily/Hayes stuff shouldn't be prevented, there should just be stricter compensation in the scenario. It's more unfair if you make a guy never able to be free from the rights of a certain team. It doesn't seem you list Tikinov as an issue, is him playing for several KHL years until his Coyotes rights expire different enough to not be an issue.

It sounds like Tikhinov, Dano (hasn't played since jr and said it would be hard), and Teuvo are all long shots. Shaw.
It seems to me we have 3 NHL centers with Kruger, a bunch of marginal's, and McNeil/Danault.
Without Kruger we could be in dire straights.

Saad only has himself to thank for the trade. Had he actually talked with his agent instead of letting him just go full tilt wanting such a large contract he might still be here. 4 million for 2 years would of probably kept him here.
