Bulls guard Ben Gordon is one of five finalists for the NBA’s 2009 J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship award.

The award is presented annually by the NBA to a player, coach or trainer for outstanding community commitment and service. It is the only official NBA award in its post season selections voted exclusively by the Professional Basketball Writers Association.

“It’s truly an honor to be mentioned as a finalist for such a prestigious award as the Kennedy Citizenship award,” Gordon wrote in an email message. “I am grateful.”

The other finalists for the 2008-09 season are Bruce Bowen of the San Antonio Spurs, Devin Harris of the New Jersey Nets, Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic and Dikembe Mutombo of the Houston Rockets, who previously won the award when he was with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2000-01.

First post on Dougs new board. w00t w00t!!

It's really gonna hurt to watch BG leave next year. He can really piss me off with his stupid turnovers, but like it or not, he is a lethal offensive weapon (usually) and our best source of points.

The more positive recognition Gordon gets, the better. The casual fan has a way too negative image of him, for some reason.

I'm a bit surprised though. I knew he did a lot of charity work, but I never knew he did it to this degree.

Well it will be a nice feather in the cap for the fan base of his new team next summer.

I finally found a disadvantage of having someone with inside sources. You constantly overanalyze their remarks. In the 2-3 seconds it took me to read your comment, I went through a thought-process that started out with me thinking you've made a joke, to 'OMG, Doug has heard something. Gordon is gone!'

Needless to say. I hope we maintain his services, but I agree that it seems unlikley and has seemed that way all year.

I think that's because of a mixture of Gordon's nature and the NBA not promoting Gordon at all.

Gordon's quiet in nature, so he would logically be the type of guy who would like to fly under the radar when doing this stuff, and not draw a ton of publicity to himself.

But it's also because of the NBA. A running joke my friends and I have while watching Bulls games on League Pass, is someone will just say, "Do the Bulls care?" or "Does Ben Gordon care?" which is to get the response, "No." The NBA just doesn't show the Bulls in any of those commercials. I think they might have showed Deng in one awhile ago. There isn't halftime mini-docs on Gordon during halftime of Bulls games on ABC. They didn't even invite the guy to the three point contest despite being the greatest young three point shooter in NBA History. (With 751 career three pointers, Gordon holds the record for most three point field goals in the first five years of a player's career. And it's not just because he's jacking. If you look at the top 100 for three point field goals made in the first five years, only two players, Hubert Davis and Mark Price have a higher 3PT%, and neither had mde even half the three point shots Gordon had).

It really is a puzzler why the NBA doesn't promote Gordon more. Deadly scorer, great three point shooter (greatest young one), a great clutch player (3rd in game winners since entering the league, 13 from breaking Jordan's record for game winners as a Bull), and a great community guy (as evidenced by being nominated for this award) as well.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I absolutely agree. Just goes to show the marketing factor in the NBA machine, doesn't it?

I don't think Gordon's gone as long as the Bulls don't act stupid. Detroit or Thundercats could offer Gordon a substantial amount, but in the current economic climate, that might not happen.

The Bulls just need to realize that some team might get Ben Gordon at a discount, but it's not going to be them. If the Bulls re-offer the $54 million over 6 years, which I think would be a good faith offer to Gordon, fair, and not play against his pride.

The Bulls will only be able to go so low. I think it's somewhere around $44-45 million over 6 years, in which the first 5 years of an MLE deal in a no tax state (Florida for sure, I think Texas too) is pretty much equal to the Bulls offer. (Using the estimated cap number the NBA sent out in that memo).

They need to get Gordon locked up, and then work on moving Hinrich/Deng after that. Paxson sounds confident that he can make some type of cap saving move this summer, so hopefully it's not just all a front.

Gordon is a hero in Mount Vernon. He does many great things there and in Chicago. Well deserved if he wins.

The MLE next year based on that Memo should be only 32 million over 5 years roughly (1st year salary of 5.5 million).

Yea the MLE is lower. If Ben does end up signing for the MLE he needs to fire his agent.

I was watching the Warriors last night and was wondering how a guy like Monta Ellis could get 66 million while he has accomplished not nearly what Ben has. I feel bad for Ben, people including me at times made him seem greedy when in actuality he does diverse to get a nice contract.

i'm feeling lucky about gordon resigning for some reason, no matter how much the odds deny it.

he's exactly the type of player john paxson loves: charitable guy, unselfish when he needs to be, a winner in college, tireless worker. the only thing people can criticize him for is his height, which isn't even that bad. he's so strong, he can still match up with most 2s in the league.

pax seemed to realize this, so i think he'll convince reinsdorf it's worth it, if that's possible.

let's hope.

Ben Gordon is a professional on and off the court. And it looks like he is a great man all around. I hope the Bulls do everything in their power to figure out a way to keep him. He is a top 10 SG in the league.

Ben Gordon sucks. All he does is give back to the community, score, make clutch shots and scare the heck out of opposing defenses. The Bulls can't afford to have such a flawed player on their team.

You forgot being one of the NBA's top fastbreak scorers on a team that is trying to become a fastpace team!

Ben Gordon has really become a very good finisher in the lane this season. He has been using his body amazingly the last few months when driving in for a layup. I think he has actually learned from Rose how to maneuver himself in traffic.

I've noticed he has been using some Dwyane Wade style bank shots this year. It's Ben Gordon, so you pretty know what the case is...he watched some Wade game film and is trying to emulate that. It's not really all that effective, because Gordon makes maybe 35-40% of those right now (Wade makes almost all of them it seems). But it is a little thing in his game that I think with another summer of practice, will help him finish on the drive more.

Gordon needs to work on his finishing altogether. Because he seems like he has the ability to take almost anyone off the dribble. He just hasn't been particularly great at finishing once he gets near the basket. If he figures out how to finish better on the drive, he will be a much more deadly offensive player.

But all of Gordon's problems come from bigger players. Shotblockers who sometimes block his shots, who sometimes alter it into a miss, and who sometimes get away with a foul.

One the fastbreak, when it's Gordon on a little guy, Gordon eats them alive.

Hopefully this will convince JR that BG is a good guy and we sign him on the first possible second. It won't be easy to replace BG and I really don't want to replace him.
Move Hinrich for whatever and Deng for whatever possible. Hopefully Toronto like him enough to take him in a Bosh-deal.
