Norton does suck. It's overpriced, memory hogging trash. I've had Avast Internet Security for a year now and I haven't gotten a virus. I had Mcafee before that and Norton before that and both suck compared to Avast

For all the people saying they don't run any anti-virus stuff, I used to be in the same boat. Probably almost a decade and not one problem, simply not by being a dumbass. Once other people started using my computers though (kids, the woman) magically I started having issues. So now I'm forced to run something so I'm not spending my weekends reinstalling OS, restoring / cleaning backups etc.

Another reason why I use *nix. You should see my old mother on the computer, she went from not knowing anything about how a computer works, to compiling her own kernels on my LFS personal. Now I have my whole family running it, even the kids. When their friends from school come over, they're like, whoa, and a lot want to install n00b linux(like ubuntu, cent) as soon as they get home.

Windows can only be accessed on my computers by my own permissions, and anyone that needs to use the computers just go straight to linux or sometimes osx.

Same here. The few times I've ever had a problem it's usually from the wife or kids clicking on something or downloading a game. Nothing horrible though. Although that's also one of the big reasons we don't have a Mac. They all like to play games and there are tons more for windows than for Macs. Especially the Sims which they have been playing for years. I also can't justify the cost of a Mac. For what we use it for, our PC works just fine.

As for the original point of the thread, I've used most of the stuff already mentioned as well as Ad-aware, Zonealarm, and Spybot S&D.

Zonealarm works especially well.

I've thought about forcing everyone to use a virtual machine (e.g. VirtualBox with a Win 7 image). That way if something gets on there, it doesn't effect the host OS and I can zap it and reimage a brand new "machine" in about 5 mins flat. I already have Ubuntu w/ a Mac theme setup this way for certain stuff I need to do. This might actually be a really good idea.

If I knew how to run Linux, I'd change my OS now.

Well, it's not too hard, but at the same time, Linux isn't as good of a desktop OS. You see, about 9 years ago, there was an internet crossroads with how to keep the internet free(free to explore, not free as far as cost).

While it still is actually quite awesome for the regular user who doesn't need a lot of windows or mac exclusive programs, Linux is 90% for those who need to transfer data heavily and often with maximum control over the systems to cater to massive security needs. It's not the operating system itself that is secure, but the power the user has over it that makes it the backbone of the world.

In short, if you don't need it, don't bother. Too much of a learning curve.
