I've always wanted to get into betting on sports, but never understood all the rules, etc. Anyone kind enough to explain them to a newbie?

if you go to bodog, it's stupid simple. deposit money (using a debit/credit card if you want) and peruse the games. If a team is -3.5, that means they are the favorite, and have to win by 4+ points. On the other side, if a team is +4.5, that means they are the underdog, and essentially get 4.5 points on top of their ending score.

Toronto is the under dog in this situation and the numbers indicate how much of a favorite/dog the team is and what you stand to win on the bet.

If you bet $100 on the Blue Jays you would win $110. If you bet on this Yankees you would win, i think, $90.

I like the ML quite a bit. Your chances are lower but the payoff is always much better than the spread.

You're not really giving yourself a chance with $40... But a smart decision to stay away regardless.

In all my trips to the casino I've probably broke even in my gambling career.

I've had some killer nights on the roulette table.

I know. I just knew that if I had brought a few hundred dollars with me I probably would have blown it all so I left most of my cash at home on purpose and just took the 40 bucks to see if I could do something with that.

Now that college football (arguably the easiest sport to win on) has started back up, it's time for major parlays.

Mine for this weekend:
Minnesota +24 (@USC)
Western Michigan +14 (@Michigan)
Georgia +3 (Vs. Baylor)
Oregon -3.5 (@ LSU)

$5 = $62.92 if I hit on all 4 games.

+3.5 means that team is the underdog, and if they lose by 3 or less (or win), you win the bet if you picked them.

Essentially, the +/- thing is saying "add this positive or negative score to the team you're betting on."

another example.

If The Bears are playing the Titans, and the Bears are favored, they'll get something like "+6.5"

If you pick them and they win by 7 or more, you win.

If they win by 6 or less (or lose), you lose the bet.

Betting on the NFL is way easier then college. I only bet on football now, I usually end up +$1500 by the time football season ends up.

I hit a 2g parlay once in the NFL. 4 teams, 3 straight up big upsets and one upset to cover. I bought the entire bar a round when I covered that last game.

I also hit a g on a baseball parlay once. I didn't even know I did it till the next day when I went to place another bet. I thought for sure I fudged a game up, but I picked the spread and not a straight up win. It was one of the best surprises of my life.
