Rep. Joe Walsh stands by accusation Tammy Duckworth politicizes her military service

Freshman Rep. Joe Walsh, who has earned a reputation for caustic remarks and spontaneous tirades, this week accused opponent Tammy Duckworth--a double-amputee who lost her legs while serving as a Black Hawk helicopter pilot in Iraq--of using her military service to score political points.

The Illinois Republican-- who has not served in the military-- on Wednesday chose not to back down from comments he made accusing his Democratic opponent of talking too much about her time in the Army.

"She is a hero, and that demands our respect, but it doesn't demand our vote," Walsh said Wednesday on CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer. "All she does, guys, is talk about her service."

On Thursday, Walsh stood by his comments, telling CNN host Ashleigh Banfield: "This wasn't a slip up. I don't regret anything I said." Walsh added that he honors every man or woman who served in the military and accused Duckworth's campaign and his opponents of "manufacturing" an issue and of conducting opposition research against him.

Walsh's comments Wednesday and Thursday followed a speech Walsh made at a campaign event Sunday at which Walsh lauded Sen. John McCain, a former prisoner of war in Vietnam, for his humility and refusal to talk candidly about his service.

"Now I'm running against a woman who, I mean-- my God-- that's all she talks about," Walsh told an audience in Elk Grove, Ill. "Our true heroes, the men and women who served us, it's the last thing in the world they talk about." Progressive site ThinkProgress captured video of Sunday's criticism:

Walsh called the ensuing controversy over his remarks Sunday a "political ploy to distort my words and distract voters."

Duckworth's campaign disagreed.

"Congressman Walsh's comments insult those who sacrificed to make this country free," Duckworth campaign manager Kaitlin Fahey said in a statement Tuesday, just before the Independence Day holiday. "Tammy is proud of her over twenty years of service with the Army and her family's legacy of fighting for this country. We can't recognize our servicemen and women enough and ask that we keep them in our thoughts during this holiday week.

Special interest groups and others have jumped to Duckworth's defense.

This week's comments were not the first time Walsh, a tea party Republican, has lobbed this type of criticism at Duckworth. His non-plussed discussion of Duckworth's sacrifice during an interview with Politico in March drew fire.

Walsh frequently makes news for his blunt remarks. In May 2011, he angered voters with an op-ed in which he stated: "too many American Jews aren't as pro-Israel as they should be."

Around that time Walsh also attributed President Obama's 2008 win to "white guilt" saying Obama being an articulate, black man made white voters feel better about themselves.

Last November, Walsh made headlines for issuing a tirade about financial regulation during a coffee meeting with constituents. "This pisses me off! Too many people don't listen!" he shouted at a constituent, physically moving to get in her face. "You don't have to scream at me, I'm not screaming at you," the woman replied, mid-rant.

Walsh defended his behavior at that event in a statement which lauded his "passion" for bank regulation.

Duckworth was recruited for the suburban Chicago 8th District race after an unsuccessful 2006 run for the state's 6th District seat, speaking engagements at the 2008 Democratic National Convention and service as Assistant Secretary of Public and Intergovernmental Affairs for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The redrawn district leans Democratic, threatening Walsh's hold on the seat.

Keep in mind this scumbag NEVER served.

When I first read the title on Yahoo yesterday i thought it was about Joe Walsh from the Eagles and though that Joe Walsh probably has very few brain cells left, he has to have more than this guy. I am not familiar with him so i am assuming he is from another part of the state.

I rarely talk about my military service, simply because I really didn't do anything of note, In a world where most people who joined up post 9/11 have gone to the middle east. If she lost body parts serving in the Army she can talk about it all she damn pleases. Shit, had I gone into combat and seen fucked up shit I would have to talk about it, or I would probably be driven insane keeping all that crap to myself. I have alot of buddies that served in Iraq and afghanistan and they talk to me about it all the time.

on the same token, i do agree that military service != to good candidate. But he shouldnt keep going on and on about it.

Actually Joe Walsh from the Eagles recently made an appearance with Tammy Duckworth in the Chicago burbs. He's been clean and sober for something like 17 years and has an album coming out soon. His first since being clean. Should be interesting to hear how that sounds. I thought I had heard that all of his music until this new release had been composed while under the influence/ partying.

I just saw a Crossroads with him and some other artists where they performed his songs. I know one of the guys was from ZZTop and I think Sara Evans and Kenny Chesney. They talked about his new album. You gotta like Joe, even though he's crazy. I remember when he was on Rock & Roll Jeopardy and he was the answer to one of the questions and he missed it.

It does get annoying when people don't shut up about themselves and use every negative event in their lives as a means of drawing attention to themselves and their political and social ideals. I am a total asshole for saying that I know. I'm sure she is a great person and inspirational to others so I'm not trying to be mean or non empathetic. It's great that she is committing herself to something greater than herself. But I understand what Joe Walsh is getting at. He could have chosen better words and a softer tone. He comes off as an asshole as I just did.

I have issues of military being over used as a propaganda machine in the bleeding hart fashion anyways. It's def an American characteristic. I understand why..it's still abused far too much for my tastes to the point where it can be insulting.

So your saying he may have been Rocky Mountain High a few too many times?

I RARELY share any military time details with folks because a. Who wants to hear that shit and b. Who wants to tell that shit.

I would never use that as an excuse or a selling point

I HAVE however made sure to emphasize my service in occasions where it could help <cough>JobInterviews<cough>

I echo the "bleeding heart" above. The most annoying thing I hear is "Well, I support the troops..." No. No you dont. Unless you are sending boxes of beef jerky, tobacco products and "adult" visual stimulus, you do not support the troops. Troops dont need frilly speeches talking about how this audience should clap when I say X about the military. Troops need jerky, smokes, and pr0n.

Those that constantly lean to some event in their lives, positive or negative, are just...well....boring.

Every 3rd answer (sorry... QUESTION) is Ozzie Osbourne or Dostojevski.

What is an Ozzie Osbourne? What indeed.

He used to be a regular on Steve & Gary way back when. When he talks he sounds like the burned out hippy, but is definitely smarter than he sounds.

Yes I saw it and Mark McGrath won. Of course Mark McGrath always won. Mark McGrath held off answering the question as long as he could to give Joe the chance. I'm sure Graham Nash who was the other contestant is bright too, but he did not do well against McGrath either.

You are giving Walsh to much credibility here. Duckworth does not run around blabbing about her service or why she is an amputee. But Walsh loves to talk about how she talks about it. That was the point of the article and that is the point of the Larry ODonnell segment showing a few seconds of her recent adds devoted to her service while John McCain, for one example, spent 90% of his time talking about his service.

Walsh is a loud mouthed, hot tempered, Tea Bagger that is more likely jealous of Duckworth's resume (because he would love to have it for political purposes). The guy is an asshole and won't win reelection unless he goes up against Joe the Plummer.

I believe he is my congressman. I think. I get emails from him all the time. I will say he does his best to engage his constituents. Emails, calls, lots of town hall meetings. Way more then I have seen other congress folks.

But **** him. Not just for the Tammy Duckworth thing, but in my experience, tea bag candidates and congress folks are just idiots. Anyone who signs a pledge to never raise taxes is just a short sided idiot. I don't want my taxes raised, don't get me wrong, however, sometimes taxes need to be raised. Perhaps something needs to be done in the district that would improve traffic, or bring more business, or just improve the quality of life for all involved. What if something went horribly bad? How is it gonna get fixed?

**** him.
