I love the fact that the Hawks are paying him squat for the duration of his contract. When I heard the Panthers are not just paying that total this yr, but for the rest of Steeg's contract, it made me go from so-so on the deal to loving this deal. For those saying they are gonna miss Hayes, sure he is a big body, but there are only so many spots on the team for that role. Right now Bickell and Bollig are filling the spot that Hayes would be trying to take. So why not trade a couple trade able pieces from Rockford, for PK depth? I think I am going to have to give Bowman my full trust. He continues to make good moves, trim and add when needed, but keeps the team strong and contending.

Very solid move by Bowman. The good definitely outweighs the bad in this deal. Get used to hearing "blueline turnover" with Versteeg but he will definitely be an upgrade on (assuming) the third line. The young guys from Rockford just haven't, for the most part, cut it at the NHL level this year. Versteeg at 2.2mil a year is a great deal and the top 9 just improved dramatically.

How's your boy Stalclown doing? :deer:

He's in god mode as usual but being dragged down by a Nashville team that could lose to a pee-wee hockey team.

And by Pee-wee, I mean Edmonton.

Great trade with Tallon picking up half the contract. Gives the Hawks unreal depth with Steeg on the third line.

Steeg is an excellent pk'er, knows the system and is a complete turnover machine. It could be worse.

CHAMPS!!!

This may be his best attribute for the Hawks this season.

Hayes will wear #12 for the Panthers & play tonight vs Minny.

Best of luck to him. Maybe he'll play like his 6'6" frame there.

While considering Pirri/Smith young guys from Rockford, I would just say Morin hasn't cut it at the NHL level yet.

I think the best part of the deal is that the pieces sent were guys with falling stock over the last year. Hayes was known to not use his body when he was acquired, it's not a aspect that was likely going to turn around... Oddly he's now wearing Jack Skilles old number.

He wont.

Hayes was gifted a spot on a team that's gonna make another run for the Cup and all he had to do was play big, and couldn't. He didn't have to fight, just take Bolligs spot and sure as hell that was too much responsibility for him. He has decent hands in front of the net. That's it. Hopefully the Panthers can find a use for him but I highly doubt it.

Olsen on the other hand could be a nice addition. Watching some Hogs games it looked like he was turning the corner on his development. He isn't gonna be a top pairing guy, but could be a decent 5th out there. Good hard, low shot, bad skater and slow, but physical to a point, and angry pylon.

I could see why from their view. It's the skille trade scenario to an exact.copy. Giving up a effective NHL player, that playing a higher role than he should since he's in Florida is suffering, and Tallons taking the gamble on his beloved draft choice despite struggles.

I've not gotten to see any Icehogs this year so idk if, like you say, Olsen is improving. I think he and Hayes looked improved this preseason. But based on last year, reports, especially for Florida fans get on these prospects is leaning to poor players. But I think Tallon needed to dish Steeger and there's still good roll spot potential easily for those two.

Poor players is a bit of a stretch. Possible role players? Sure. Many Panther fans are glad to see Steeg go, so while theres a lot of Hawk fans shitting all over them right now it doesn't seem like they actually care too much over it.

I'm being realistic. Steeger is perfect for a third line role and taking Froliks spot on the PK. He is gonna turn the puck over and now that he has Kaner to watch i'm sure his neutral zone play is gonna be shit. But the fact remains the guy has a set of hands, he can put it in the back of the net, and unless all his injuries has slowed him down, he is a fast skater. Did the Hawks give up too much? Oh hell no. The fact they got 50% of the contract picked up makes this a fleecing, but Olsen could get it together, and for the Panthers I like the idea of Campbell being there for him. While I don't see a second pairing guy out of him with his skating, he could be a fill in guy there if an injury came about and be a perfect bottom pairing guy.

**** Hayes, hes a throw in. All that size and he wants to skate with elite skaters.

My poor player knock is based on last year being down trends for them both. People will frequently judge by that.

Olsen may work with Campbell like he did with Keith and how Hammer adjusted to the NHL.

Hayes is still young though, he's that prototypical big skill guy who dominated at college by not needing to be physical. It may never click but who knows.

Now we wait to see what Tallon offers for Beach and Kayes.

The craziest part about this trade is that the Hawks shipped two prospects away, yet I don't think anyone feels like they're irreplaceable. There's another Hayes coming up the pipeline that could be even better (not to mention Morin), and guys like Dahlbeck, Svedberg, and Clendening (with Jahns jumping into the picture next year, hopefully) make Olsen's departure borderline irrelevant.

Kayes is an interesting situation. If its still the old rules, he could sign with anybody during the summer. Maybe Dale thinks he can get both Hayes brothers, who knows, not me. I don't know the signing rules that good.

Oh, **** Beach. That could have been Eberle.

I'm not gonna lie, the more I watch Clendening the more I see a not as good skating Brian Campbell. Other teams have to know when he is on the ice, his vision is almost Kane-like in the A. His last couple games he has this aura about him. I cant wait until he makes the Hawks.

Johns? Something tells me he isn't gonna sign.

I know you're not the only one with those thoughts. I don't know if it was a quote or a tweet but I remember a comment from him saying that his future plans absolutely involved the Chicago Blackhawks. Grain of salt, and all that.

The only detriment for Jahns (and Clendening, as well) is that the Hawks have 4 defensemen who probably aren't going anywhere anytime soon in 2, 4, 7, and 8. Only two other spots left, and if you're looking for big ice time in the NHL, you may not be finding it in Chicago.
