Who needs them now. Bears just want to ruin your day. I will argue that hockey playoffs are more exciting. imho

Part of what I enjoy about hockey is the longer season and the longer playoff series.... that stuff is just impossible with Football, but it is somewhat annoying how fast your NFL team can be out of it.

In hockey you may see some ups and some downs.... you will see injuries and see whether or not your team can battle through them for however many games people are out... It is not an incredibly long season but it feels less absolute than how football works.

In football.... you're hurt bad enough..... you're out....see ya next year. You have a cold streak.... you're out.... see ya next year. Even if you make the playoffs.... you have an off day.... you're out see ya next year. Your QB gets hurt or has a bad year or a bad streak of games..... you're done.... see ya next year.

I like that Crow can get hurt and as a team the guys can survive and still play great hockey in front of Raanta or Darling and win. Its not like if Toews goes down or has a cold streak for a few games our season is over.

Don't get me wrong I love football.... but hockey is a physical sport I enjoy watching and its not quite so absolute where a couple injuries and a couple bad games means your team is done and you might as well get ready for next year.

If only hockey and basketball didn't overlap. I could watch awesomeness the whole year instead of only the winter season.

In all honesty, one of my favorite parts about hockey is that it's relative unpopularity among the US sports fans means that intelligent discussion is so much easier to find than with any of the other pro sports in this country.

I don't mean to say that I want to refrain it from growing in popularity, just that I enjoy its current under-the-radar status.

True. There are far less hockey fans like me than there are like the rest of you. And that's in a city where hockey has thrived for the past several years. Far less meatball fans in hockey. Perhaps that's why I tend to like the posts in this forum more than the others...intelligent and civil discussion all around.

There are some out there, for sure. But it seems like every damn person in the area has an opinion on the Bears, and the dumber it is, the louder they are.

Hockey just doesn't have that type of following yet, even with the recent success of the Hawks.

Yeah idk what it is about Hockey but it is hard for meatballs to go all herp-a-derp on it as far as I can tell.

My Dad is a meatball fan when it comes to football and he will say meatball shit.... but when it comes to hockey he is kinda blissfully ignorant so he watches and he cheers when they score or win and he curses when they lose and he has nothing meatball to say about a hockey game.

Kind of tying in with my long rant earlier.... hockey is also so much team oriented that it is much harder to pinpoint players and just harp on them like you would a QB you don't like. Sometimes you hear people try it with the Goalies.... but again usually when Crow gives up a goal and someone tries to be like "ZOMG DIS GOALIE SUCKS.... PUT IN DA BACKUP" it is pretty easy to get them to shut it down cause they don't know much about hockey and Goalie giving up a goal is not like QB throwing an INT.... it is much easier to defend a Goalie giving up a goal by pointing out failures within the Defense or a lucky bounce of the puck than it is to try and defend a QB for throwing an INT.

But I am sure the meatballs will show up sooner or later.... spouting stuff like "ZOMG IDK WHY THEY PLAY NOT TO LOSE INSTEAD OF PLAYING TO WIN LIKE DA OTHER TEAMS DO"

The meatballs tried to get Patrick Kane traded in 2011. They failed, thank God.

The Bears are still probably the "favorite sons" of Chicago sport fans but the way they're being run particularly in this span of time....that will not continue. The Blackhawks, Bulls and now even the Cubs have built or are in the process of building franchises designed to succeed not only now but for the future as well. The Bears are starting to lag behind and having the "posterchild" for turning around a franchise in the same city won't help them. Rocky and Mac are indirectly changing the landscape for every team in Chicago.

Oh, definitely. If the Hawks throw together another Cup run or two (or three, or four, etc.) before this decade ends, you're going to have a whole generation of kids growing up with the Hawks being the best team in town. That's got to account for something. Plus, the NHL does have significant more exposure than it's had in the past, with NBC dedicating a ton of advertising and air time to promoting the game. Add that in with a potential period of dark times for the Bears ahead, and that spotlight on the Blackhawks will only get brighter. There could be a decent swing of the Chicago sports scene.

I still think football will end up on top nationwide, though, because it seems like the NFL is deeply rooted within so many aspects of American culture. It's just part of life here, similar to the way that hockey is in Canada and soccer is in Europe. Changes like that don't happen in a span of 5-10 years. That takes decades.
