How do people actually like the Campbell trade? He was the best player on the Blackhawks for long stretches last season when everyone else had their heads up their asses.

Let the fairies and sugar plums dance in your heads all you want with this cap room, but the fact of the matter is that the Blackhawks are a much worse team today then they were yesterday.

What happens if the Hawks don't get a Richards or a Wisniewski or a Kaberle or a Laich? What happens if, because of all the cap room, we over pay for some average talents or resign Forlik and Campoli to deals way over the market value?

There was enough room under the cap to where the Blackhawks didn't have to straight salary dump Soupy. They could have waited and gotten a legit player or prospects or both. Look at what the Flyers got for Jeff Carter, and that was more a less a cap saving move.

It was a shitty rushed deal and I hate it.

i always liked Campbell. and would agree with the opening of that rant, having said that, he had a good run here, seemed to me like the fans and media really put em under a microscope for some reason, probably because of the $$$$

Leddy developing and Campolis puck moving abilities will make up for Campbell..

Also, this trade pretty much guarantees that Sharp will be resigned long term, which helps us immensly.

You can what if all you want, but the hawks have money, and are a desireable destination for FA's...they will land some.

Scotty Bowman knows what he is doing, and he will tell his boy Stan exactly what to do...I trust Bowmans experience and Rings more than what i think or anybody else thinks on a message board or twitter...

Yes, we are a worse team today than yesterday, but it is June, not opening day...

Yes he was huge for the cup run and was the best D man, and best skater behind Toews and Sharp last season but that price tag matters big time, and that WAS in the past. He also gave a big boost to the team after he came back from injury both times. While they were serious hits to cause his injuries, it's all a add up that his production is never worth that pay.

All that was in the past anyway, if Campbell would of been the best D player on the ice in 2011-2012 that's a big blunder on the likes of Keith and Seabs who now have an off-season to rest and train to top notch health for the next season.

As Tbo mentioned, we have improving puck moving defense-men with Leddy and others who could join the team in a year or two and Campoli can likely be kept in line for his pay. He'll also have a bigger role on ice time and puck moving now which is his greatest strength.

Nic Leddy has proven nothing in the NHL. He played like 9 minutes a game last year, he was the defensive version of Jon Scott.

You want that to have a bigger role? Granted he is young and talented, but you are fine with moving the team leader in +/-? Look at the Blackhawks record when Campbell plays/not plays. It is crazy the difference he made. And you are fine with moving Leddy up to this spot? He can't do what Campbell does. Campoli can't do what Campbell does. The Blackhawks strength is when the D men skate out of trouble and hit the pass...... Soupy's strength.

What bothers me the most is the fucking rush Stan was in to get this deal done. He was like a little kid in a waiting room after the hawks last pick.

Nothing about this trade helps this season. It was a cop out.

If we are going to compare deals, then let's look at all the details. The Flyers should have gotten more for Jeff Carter since he is 6 years younger than Campbell, didn't have a NTC, and makes nearly 2 million less per year.

Look right now the Hawks have less talent on the club then they had at the start of the day yesterday. That said they now have the cap room to go out and do things this offseason. This team had really weaknesses especially depth at the forward position, center mostly but winger as well, that can now be addressed. The reason so many of us are happy is that the club can more efficiently allocate cap room.

The article you posted is a very interesting read. However, the article fully admits that Campbell is overpaid for his production. That is the most important fact in a league with a hard salary cap. Or did you not think that this roster was flawed last season? No one can argue that replacing Campbell with Campoli is going to be a step down. However, the Blackhawks have the chance to really make this team better with the additional cap space.

That's one terribly over cynical biased article if I've ever seen one write by someone not named Rosenbloom or Mariotti. I've always been a Campbell supporter. He's right on the facts he has but there's no reason to attack those draft picks as if they were redrafting a Kyle Beach player.

I don't agree the mentality that Campoli has any more leverage now. He is still a RFA and there's a market on the outside they could go after he wants much more.

Despite Campbell's prior significance, there's not the expectation of him being there there anymore. The record when he wasn't playing of course was bad, but not only because he wasn't playing but due to the fill in players being rubbish. Hendry-Boynton-Scott. Without expecting him or having to relay on him, it's now a different outlook for the team.

It's not replacing Campbell for Olesz or replacing Campbell for Campoli-Leddy but for more space and time of the collective D crew. Nik-Campoli-Leddy-(who they can add with the current 15mil cap space)

You have now learned the definition of a salary dump. It is a step back for now, but there is an asset they didn't have before called cap space (around 4 mil or so). And Campbell wasn't, at any time, eating minutes as a top pairing defenseman. So, of course, he's going to look better against teams' non-top lines. He wasn't our top PP quarterback, he wasn't out there killing major PK time. He's a good player, but in no way did he fulfill the 7 million dollar contract.

What happens if the Hawks don't get a Richards or a Wisniewski or a Kaberle or a Laich? What happens if, because of all the cap room, we over pay for some average talents or resign Forlik and Campoli to deals way over the market value?

The longer Stan waited, the harder BC would be to move as his skills will diminish. His contract isn't front or back loaded. With his limited trade clause, options are wayyy smaller. He could only deal with the 8 of the 30 teams. This gives those other teams far more leverage (salary considered) than us.

Scotty knew how to coach, for sure...the best. But GM? Not so much.

Campoli may be cheaper but he's not going to provide all that much more than Soupy point wise..

They need a guy like Ehrhoff.

What if what if what if.

The fact is the Hawks got rid of one of the worst contracts in the NHL. That is the only thing that matters right now.

And it is awesome.

But it doesn't matter right now, because it's June 25th. That's why cap space matters right now.

The odds are far in their favor they the start of the season will be fielding a better well filled out team than the one that went onto the ice last season.

The deal with Campbell was that if he was a force on offense, he was terrible defensively and last year when he really played well on D...he was a bit of a no show on offense with only 27 points. When your pulling in the type of money the Hawks were paying him, you should be able to do both. I liked him a lot but the bottom line is that you cant under achieve when your the highest paid player on the team. Watch for another fire sale on Hossa next year if he doesnt pick up his game.

I'll sure miss his 27 points & his 6 points for a so called 'PP QB'.

Everyone overvalues the shitty contract and undervalues the strong play.

I could have seen Campbell being moved last season, so that guys like Buff and Ladd could have stayed. And I could see him getting moved next season when Leddy is a more mature player and can actually maybe replace Campbell.

But this season it made no sense. There was already room under the cap, the free agent class wasn't that strong and we had no huge names to lock up long term (after the Crawf deal).

Also, the guy we got in that trade is a bum... Stan could have done much better, he just had horrible timing.

The shittiness of his contract could never be overvalued. They've been shopping him for a long time and now someone finally bit.

And there is absolutely a huge name that needs to be locked up. Sharp.

Next you're going to tell me you liked Huet's deal.
