Laurence Holmes thinks he legitimately could be the next Drew Brees. If the FO seems that, you take him.

Yeah but nobody really KNEW that when he was a prospect. Otherwise he would have easily gone 1st overall. Obviously
He had the best arm I'd seen in like forever but there were plenty of questions about his game that regular fans couldn't answer. What was surprising is that so many teams that could have used him, took a pass after doing 'expert' study and getting him one on one with a blackboard. Browns, Bears, Jags, Titans, Jets, Bills all needed a QB and passed on him.

Lol, how? Wilson is 5,11" and has a different frame, 205lb at the draft. Young navigates a pocket as well as I've seen at this point in a career but he's likely at least and inch shorter and has a VG line to move behind. He's reportedly going to try and reach Wilson's weight by his Pro day but will he be the same mobile player at that weight and able to maintain it? I'm not saying he may not turn out great but don't make him what he's not. He's short, naturally lean and with average arm strength. It will be a genuine concern for some teams. There's a lot of natural ability there but he doesn't have velocity like Mahomes or even Fields for that matter. His recognition, maneuverability in the pocket and arm angle stuff does look great and that's huge but in the NFL, your greatest asset is availability.

The injury concern and ability to see through the lines is real for him. I doubt he'll hold up to a beating like Fields took. Hopefully he'll be more prudent about taking hits and get more calls due to his size. Refs really didn't protect our QB and it's difficult to understand why other than viewing him as a runner.
I’ve always wanted to be taller so if it works I’d like to know his secrets

If I recall, the big concern was that he’s was a gunslinger that relied on his athleticism and played too much “backyard” football.

He always had the raw talent, but he didn’t look like he would fit in a pro style scheme that makes smart plays.

Basically, like comparing him to Cutler.

And from a system that masks QB problems that show up after drafted.

That’s kinda a silly comparison bc the team that drafted Brees gave up on him…

That is simplified to the point of being bullshit.

He had back to back pro bowl season with a franchise tag.
The chargers had drafted a very smart player, and rivers likely would have been sent packing had it not been for the injury.
At the time spanos wanted the extension badly. The injury nuked it.
A torn labrum and shredded cartilage that took over 10 permanent anchors to repair and ended up degrading to the point that it forced him to retire before being ready to.

That wasn't a boo-boo, it was a catastrophe.
Shipping him with that injury was far and away the most logical choice with the guy they had behind him.

Without the benefit of hindsight, 32 teams out of 32 would have done exactly as sd did.

I absolutely believe that they worried that Mahomes was too much of a terrific athlete to become a great quarterback. I wonder if down the road he doesn't take a fly at being a baseball pitcher?

So you think after he retires from the NFL, at probably 40 he will try to be an MLB pitcher? Brilliant.

And why would too much athleticism make you less likely to be a great QB?

Umm, he ran a 4.8 40, a 9'6" broad jump and a 30" vert.
Oh and "too athletic" is NFL racist fan code for "too black." Did anyone ever worry Steve Young, Joe Montana, or Fran Tarkington were "too athletic" to be great QB's? Hell Johnny Manziel was never doubted and made a fortune being an overly athletic douchebag, even nicknamed "Johnny fucking Football" by being an athletic shitty white QB.

If the Bears draft Bryce Young we will not be in the playoffs for another decade….

Thank you for bringing this up. As a guy who lives in KC and gets an up-close look at Mahomes regularly, people in the national sphere have this thought that Mahomes is some amazing athlete with great legs. The fact of the matter is that Mahomes is slow as all hell, a terribly-awkward runner, and not all that athletic.

But the dude is slippery as hell and just knows how to buy time. He's also the quickest processor in the league, with an arm of the gods. He's pretty similar to Aaron Rodgers. May go down as the best ever, but a great athlete he is not (at least not compared to many NFL QBs).

Coming out of college, there's a reason Mahomes was generally thought of as the third best QB on the board. His ungodly ability to process and make the right read couldn't be seen on the Tech tapes, because that's not the offense they ran. He was a gunslinger with Cutler comps. The Chiefs and Saints saw something, though, that others didn't. Chiefs snuck ahead, and the rest is history. Wish it was the Bears, but good for the Chiefs and their front office.

He had great retention and conceptualization when they put him on the chalk board and the best arm in a decade or more. His shuttle time was better than Warson or Trubs so the ability to quickly side step a rush was not a big surprise. Not close to an elite athlete but all the things you need to be great passer in the NFL.
