We all know jimmy is an elite defender, but can he win defensive player of the year. I personally think that the DPOY disproportionately favors big man instead. There were a few years luol should have won but didn't.

He could, but since he's also the #1 option offensively it's not the easiest task. Even Money, Pussy, and Weed has to spread out energy.

doubt it, i see Jimmy focusing more on offense than defense just like last year

its also possible we don't rank top 5 (maybe not even 10) in defense this year...giving up 114 points to the pistons doesn't sit well. but its only pre-season/still very early, so i'll give more time for defense to get worked out.

i saw allota hopeful signs on offense though...i mean just the quickness of them getting up court and getting into a set is refreshing...much better than plodding up the court and trying to feed the post for 20 secs

now if we can just put it together and stay healthy we may have chance at getting our ass whipped in the finals by the spurs or warriors...but we beat LeBron #thatsallthatmattersyo

Doubt it. That being said I still think he's the best perimeter defender in the league.

I think Kawhi Leonard and Tony Allen are probably as good if not better defensive players. Butler MIGHT be a SLIGHTLY better offensive player than Kawhi (not that it's relevant to the conversation). Can Butler win DPOY? He certainly has the talent and athleticism to be one of the most dominant defenders ever. It's pretty uncommon for a wing defender or guards in general to win the award though. It seems like it mostly goes to dominant rim protecting centers who rack up blocked shots.

I still don´t know why the guy who makes the most steals over a season never wins the award.

A steal has much more value than a block because you always gain possesion while a block most of the times lands out of bounds and the opponent still has the ball.

That said my guess will be Anthony Davis for DPOY this year.

Solid point. That said, blocks are much cooler and assert dominance.

With the exceptions of probably Curry and Rubio and maybe Iverson depending on your opinion of him, a lot of those guys are pretty darn good defenders. Perhaps not DPOY types, but definitely very good. CP3 is a monster with those steal numbers.

Any player in the NBA can win DPOY. So yes, Butler can win the award.

Maybe if he dished out a lot of assists, then writers would look for a reason to justify giving him some award. Wait, that doesn't work with guards.....

Maybe if he was in the top 5 in blocks, in addition to his normal statline?

DPOY winners have been really hit or miss, as real defensive players. It's either A: giving an outstanding player an award that fits nowhere else, but is known for defense. Or B: Block LBJ since LeBron doesn't deserve it, because he mainly plays D when he wants to turn it on.

Thus why it's going to be a big man. Davis will likely win it.

That's a fair assumption about Davis getting it. Last year, I thought Gobert deserved it but the writers tend to penalize teams that miss the playoffs.
