Can the Bulls live without three point shooting? If not where does it come from?

If you ignore "getting a superstar" as a goal, the Bulls had two glaring holes that a balanced team would not have; interior scoring and three point shooting. Their first two signings reflected the team attempting to fill those holes...

Either C.J. Watson or Kyle Korver will be on the floor for the vast majority of any given game. The Bulls also have half-way respectable three-point shooters in Rose and Deng. I'm pretty optimistic that the Bulls are going to be much-improved from behind the stripe than in the previous season...

The starters will struggle but I think Korver will end up being a major x factor for us. Now that he is fully healthy, I think he will get 30mpg and provide spacing. Watson will also see some minutes and Rose and Deng should be a bit more aggressive behind the line.

I look at it like this; the three point shooting can't get much worse than last season.

i expect us to be as good as the 76ers. everyone sucks at shooting the 3, but but eh hey at least korver is slightly better than kapono on defense.

for everyone that's estatic about watson shooting the 3, he shot 31 percent last year. rose shot 33% in the playoffs. i think that's going to be his best. brewer shot less than 25%. deng shot 38% in the season, but he shot .83% in the playoffs going 1-12. i think the later number grounds expectation of deng's shooting abilities. especially if you consider that he only made 30 out of 80 attempts in the season. besides korver our next best shooter is bogans. he shot 35%.

rose might improve this year, but generally after 6 years in the league, you dont just develop a 3 pt shot. i'm not as optimistic about deng's shooting as everyone else is.

yeup. i'm pumped.

I think the regular season minutes for the Bulls will look something close to this:

C- Noah (29), Boozer (5), Thomas/Asik (14)
PF- Boozer (28), Gibson (20)
SF- Deng (31), Korver (14), Bogans (3)
SG- Brewer (28), Watson (15), Bogans (5)
PG- Rose (38), Watson (10)

I see Watson and/or Korver being on the court between 30-40 minutes of most games.

Korver is playing way more than 14mpg. Double it.

the bulls will definitely need quality minutes from a sharpshooter like korver

look for him to get at the very very least 20 MIN PG...probably quite a bit more than that

I am hoping that you guys are right, and that Deng is playing in the 25-minute range, and Korver has nearly 20. The thing is that I don't see Korver playing much 2-guard, because the Bulls already have 3 guys who can play the 2-spot (Brewer, Watson, Bogans) much more efficiently than Korver.

And, let's not forget, Luol Deng has averaged over 35 minutes-per-game for most of his career. It would be a pretty drastic change just to see him at 25 minutes.

Watson is a pg and Bogans is an end of the bench guy. We didn't pay Korver more than the other two combined to be a 15mpg guy. He has played a lot of sg in his career. Brewer will play 28mpg at SG, Korver 14, Watson 6.

Watson is a combo-guard, who plays much more like an undersized SG than anything else... he plays mainly off-the-ball. I'd actually rather Korver cut into Deng's minutes than C.J. Watson. I think Deng has been playing too many minutes for the span of his young career. Some guys just aren't built to play that long every night, and break down as the year goes along.

Back to the subject at hand- the Bulls sort of would handcuff themselves in terms of fast break/slashing offense with a perimeter of Deng-Korver-Rose, but I defffffinitely like the sounds of that to spread the floor in a slow-paced game.

*imagining that in a half-court set with Rose and Boozer working the pick and roll*

That won't happen. Deng will continue to get his minutes. Deng is a superior player to Korver and will continue to get 30+ minutes a game. And I wouldn't want it any other way given the roster. While injuries are a concern, Deng is still a young player. 25 minutes for Deng will not lead to added production from the small forward position, on either side of the court.

I can't imagine where Korver gets 30 minutes a game from.

Actually 3 point range is one of the most likely things to add deep in your career. It's not that uncommon for guys to increase their range deep in their careers. Especially given that Deng hasn't been put in position to be a three point shooter for much of his career.

The Bulls actually told him to not shoot threes in the Skiles era (which made sense given they had a backcourt of Kirk and Ben who could both shoot).

I don't see Korver playing over 30 minutes. I see him as a player in the 25-28 minute range. Remember that while he is a constant shooting threat offensively, he's a total defensive liability in most cases. Deng is the overall better player and he will get 30+ minutes. My hope is that it's only 32-34 minutes instead of 38, but alas, not my decision to make.
