Instead of more of Grim being all
in this thread, I thought we could maybe take a swing at perhaps explaining
why Toews is struggling mightily this season. To me, he doesn't look hurt. He doesn't seem to be hiding any sort of injuries. I don't see any hesitance in board battles. I don't see anything different about him physically. Is it something mental? Could be. But I'm not going to play armchair psychologist here.
There is one thing I've seen mentioned before and I thought it'd be worth bringing into this discussion. You know what other No. 1 center is sucking out loud this year? Anze Kopitar. Through 27 games he has 8 goals and 8 assists for 16 points Same numbers as Toews.
You know who's playing a bit better, but still well below his career pace? Sidney Crosby. He's got just 6 goals and 13 assists in 27 games, with his 19 points falling well shy of his career pace at over a point per game.
If you're into some of those fancy stats, specifically Corsi and Fenwick ratings, Kopitar is slightly above his career pace (57% Fenwick and Corsi this year), around 55.5% for his career) , Toews a bit more below (Corsi - 57.1 Career, 53.7 this year; Fenwick 56.8 career, 51.8 this year), and Crosby is well below (Corsi 53.4 career, 46.8 this year; Fenwick 54.1 career, 46.9 this year).
I put those three names together after
reading this article from the Committed Indian about the aforementioned trio last week.
They'll all be 28 by the end of this season (though not til April for Toews), they're all No. 1 centers who are widely regarded for their all-around abilities, they've all played a ton of hockey in the last 4-5 seasons, and suddenly they're all playing at levels below their career norms.
Thoughts?
