He hits Gilbert who wasn't even near the puck.

Carcillo was looking at him the whole way.

You know what- I'll go with the Shanahan decision... he's impressed me as a guy who not only has been there, and wasn't exactly that gentle of a player (clean but physical ...) ... and what he said (according to the Trib), makes perfect sense to me.

Don't feel like messing with embed tags ...

"Puck not anywhere near" -Video clearly contradicts that statement.

I will give you that it does look like he is going for the hit all the way. I'll also give you that the puck being near is immaterial in this instance -yeah - ugly play the more times I watch it.

I bet Carcillo hyper-extended his knee or both of them -just based upon the positioning, it looks like the injury occurred with Gilbert (for lack of a better word) but rebounding off of the board.

Well deserved suspension, no need for hits like that in the NHL.

Surely Carcillo earned himself a suspension, but I haven't been too fond of Shanahan.

Having experience outweighs the bad (playing favorites - *Red Wings*) and the video vignettes to explain a decision is a good attempt (although futile when the decision itself is poor - like lipstick on a pig) to bring credibility to a job that had been rightfully ridiculed in the past.

Heres a bit about it
The NHL has suspended Daniel Carcillo for seven games. Carcillo is being punished for hiting Edmonton's Tom Gilbert from behind. "This is a 50-50 puck that either player can win," NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan said. "In such cases a reasonable amount of physical contact is permissible as the players jostle for position. However, on this play Carcillo slows up and gets behind Gilbert just as Gilbert begins slowing down and bracing himself for some contact, Carcillo explodes into him, causing a violent crash into the boards. This is a clear violation of the boarding rule." Carcillo hurt his knee on the play and it's possible that he'd be unavailable for the duration of this suspension anyways. However, if Carcillo's knee injury isn't severe, then he might return when the suspension ends on January 18th. (Source: Chicago Tribune)

Forgot that Shanahan's videos show the hit. I'll just check out that channel on NHL.com

Carcillo has to be smarter than this. He knows his reputation follows him and he certainly had enough time to decide whether or not to make this play. I agree with the earlier post. If it was one of our guys on the receiving end, we'd be calling for a longer suspension. He's lucky he got off this easy with his checkered past.

Just watched the hit and that was nasty. Didn't leave his feet, but definitely dirty. He deserved the suspension.

That was a pretty stupid play. At the beginning of the season, Carcillo was doing all the right things.

This hit is him regressing and going back to his old ways. I hope he learns his lesson because of the long suspension and knee injury.

This is why there are some folks out there who are kinda outraged at Shanahan for only giving him 7 games. He was suspended two games earlier this season for a violent boarding hit on Pitkanen and this is his tenth or so time being called in on the carpet.

What "lesson" is taught here?

Let me clarify- I can't find fault in Shanahan's logic, but I also will have to admit to not following his decisions league-wide aside from as it directly relates to the Hawks... so I don't know if he plays favourites or not.

Totally agree. The fact that he started the season suspended, garnered another suspension earlier in the season, and just the sheer stupidity of the play led me to believe this was going to be a longer suspension.

Shanahan obviously plays favorites. Torres elbows guys in the head three games in a row and only gets a two game suspension.

Then other guys do less of a hit and get a longer suspension. Keep in mind that Torres is a repeat offender.
