The NHL has suspended Daniel Carcillo for seven games. Carcillo is being punished for hiting Edmonton's Tom Gilbert from behind. "This is a 50-50 puck that either player can win," NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan said. "In such cases a reasonable amount of physical contact is permissible as the players jostle for position. However, on this play Carcillo slows up and gets behind Gilbert just as Gilbert begins slowing down and bracing himself for some contact, Carcillo explodes into him, causing a violent crash into the boards. This is a clear violation of the boarding rule." Carcillo hurt his knee on the play and it's possible that he'd be unavailable for the duration of this suspension anyways. However, if Carcillo's knee injury isn't severe, then he might return when the suspension ends on January 18th. (Source: Chicago Tribune)
