Grabow should be given the David Patton treatment. Think of an injury and keep him on there for a long time.

1. Our rotation has been excellent this year. There isn't a spot for Cashner in it. Next year, maybe. Right now? No.

2. We don't have anyone from the right side, outside Carlos Marmol, who can get hitters out. We have Marshall and Russell (sometimes) from the left side. Gorzelanny should be fine in relief. I actually hope we can move Russell to long relief and let Gorzelanny settle into a specialist role, or maybe even let him take care of the 6th and 7th if we need him to.

3. Cashner was a dirty closer at TCU. Do you know how often closers are taken in the first round? Drew Storen (already pitching in Washington) and Cashner are rarities. The bullpen is nothing new to Cashner.

So the Cubs call up the pitching prospect that isn't even working out of the bullpen in AAA...........nice.

maybe you should look at what ZAN said

I think adding Cashner to our pen could help because we need another person who can close with a 1-3 run lead

Maybe I did.....and I still feel it's a mistake to take someone who could become a top of the rotation starter and move him to the bullpen when you already have another prospect ready at AA who is actually pitching out of the bullpen. The risk/reward isn't something I'd be messing with. Maybe the Cubs are hoping for a Phil Hughes/Papelbon-esque result...

i dont think we are

we just need an extra guy who can pitch in the pen b cuz it needs some help

the rotation has not been the issue this year

it has been

A. A Ram and Lee cant hit a dang thing and the offense is stagnant

B. Our pen has not been very good and has cost us a couple of games

Cashner has played in the pen before its not like this is brand new to him

And we have a top rated prospect currently pitching out of the BP down in Iowa already...we don't need to call the starter up.

I know. So again..why call up the starter? I wasn't for calling up Cashner in general...no matter where he was going to pitch out of.

Ok? But he's currently been a starter in the minors for the better part of 2 seasons and has only made 4 relief appearances in 43 games. I'm hoping Cashner does well but IMO it's risky to take a chance at ruining a top of the rotation starter for the next 5-10 years to get some BP help for a season that is already lost in most people's opinion.

I'm mixed on the move. I like it because we get to see one of our top pitching prospects come up and hopefully get hitters out. I don't like it because he is in the bullpen and I would much rather see him coming in next year and start. I just don't want him to turn into another Jeff Samardzija.

Cashner is a far better prospect than Shark is/was but I see the overall point.
