Catching up with... Viktor Stalberg - Chicago Blackhawks - News

How have the Blackhawks been spending their offseason? chicagoblackhawks.com recently sat down with your favorite players to see how their summer has gone so far and discuss some of their aspirations for the 2011-12 NHL campaign. Today, chicagoblackhawks.com caught up with winger Viktor Stalberg, who capped his first season with the Blackhawks with 24 points (12G, 12A) in a career-high 77 games.

What have you been up to this summer?
I’ve been back home in Sweden all summer, working out and playing as much golf as possible. I’m trying to see the friends and family that I don’t get to see too much during the year, so it’s nice to be home.

Have you been keeping in touch with your teammates?
Not too much... I try to keep in touch through Facebook or Skype, but we kind of do our own thing in the summer. When we all meet up, like at the Convention, it’s great to see everyone again.

Have you been on any vacations?
I haven’t. I made plans to go on vacation but nothing happened, so we’ll see. It’s starting to get close to the season, so I might skip that for this summer.

Are there specific skills you’re working on over the summer?
I haven’t worked on much yet, but I'm going to start skating again soon. There are a few things I want to get better at — get my hands a little softer, get better control and work on my balance a little bit.

What’s your personal goal for the upcoming season?
I don’t know if I have any personal goals in terms of points or goals. I want to be a bigger part of the team and help out as much as I can. I feel like I’m improving as a player, and that’s the biggest thing. I can improve my game in many ways, whether it’s playing on the penalty kill or power play. I definitely want to improve my overall game, so I can play more and help out.

"I'm just fucking around. I'm not really motivated to be a champion."

Wow... If you're gonna do that, at least lie to me. Tell me you're working on skating backwards, or that you've been in the garage trying to fire the puck through a tire you hung from the ceiling, or that you're skating every morning to stay in shape. Lie to me. Don't just come out and say "a whole lot of XBox, a lot of golf, and I'm trying to hide that 900k those dumbasses gave me as quickly as I can in case they decide to take it back. Yep... I've been LOUN-GING bitches. Our superstars are trying to improve so that'll make the team better. No need for me to bust my ass."

I never liked Stalberg. All he does is skate. He can skate fast. He can't shoot the puck or do anything on offense. I wanted to kill myself when he was on the top line with Toews and Kane.

Unfortunately, after a year with the guy, the jury is still out in my household. His speed is one thing, then there's the rest. Hopefully, he'll give us a great reason to increase his 875K

117 games played is more than enough to judge a player at the NHL level. Do you think all of a sudden he will learn how to stick handle, and skate in other directions rather than just straight. cmon now. What are you going to say this year when he is bad once again? "oh he isnt getting used right by Q" "he isnt getting top 6 mins" ( when he obviously doesnt deserve them ) but anyway...he will get some hits

Like I said first "Full" NHL season. This was his 2nd full year in North America. Most of these guys get to develope in the minors, and play with the core before they move up. Stalberg jumped right into Chicago's Line-up, and Toronto's. So he doesn't score every night, we saw at the end of last year he became a bit more reliable in his own zone, and wasn't afraid to get physical. Looks like all that matters is Goals & Points to most people on this board, Dewey you of all should know there is more to just racking up points.

It isnt all about the points, but when you have jack shit for stats, than it is a cause for concern. all areas of his game need to improve if he wants to succeed. as a 4th liner, im fine with it. as a top 6 im not.

Now, I'm not going to put the two on an equal level, but just came across these stats and wanted to share them:

Stalberg's career numbers after 117 games:

21 goals, 17 assists, -11.

Patrick Sharp's career numbers after 116 games (first 4 NHL seasons)

19 goals, 19 assists, +2

I think that some guys just take longer to adapt to playing in the NHL than they do in other sports. It's too early to write off Stalberg as a bust. I'm giving him one more year to do something. He should get plenty of chances to succeed in 2011-12.

By the way, Sharp scored 20 goals in the season following the numbers I posted.

Exactly, plus he is coming to North America to play, totally different then playing over seas.
