I hope so. It's a nice little oasis imo. Fucking put in a 5 star resort for those *******. They better appreciate me
I did that for a bit, but we are overrun by red wing blackbirds, and they are aggressive and run everyone else away. Occasional robins, mourning doves....now and then a cardinal and a goldfinch.

Never see red winged blackbirds here. 3 blocks down the street? See them all the time.

They nest in bullrushes and cattails; we are right on the water retention that is all bullrushes. They show up when the weather breaks for spring, and take off midsummer and head further south. There are evenings in the spring when they are returning to the nests that hundreds of them are flying at once calling each other...crazy loud.

Any birds show up yet?

I know you didn't ask me, but... We had some white necked hummingbirds buzzing around the last few days, I am sure they will get to fighting soon when a few more show up. We also had a few nests of some sort of sparrows that popped a few eggs and the babies were loud as hell for a couple of weeks and gone now. There might be another round though as we are still seeing pairs floating around. Wife heard a horned owl a couple of weeks ago, which felt really late to me, usually they are here when it is cold as hell, their hoot is rather unmistakable though.

There is sort of a weird bird thing around here. One of the neighbors feeds the birds so there is always a mess of them. Pigeons, Doves, Sparrows, Grackles, the occasional murder of Crows.... etc. I have to clean the pigeon/dove prints off my picture windows and slider, but clean windows only make them hit it more, it is kind of a *****.

To get back on topic though this also seems to bring around predators such hawks and cats. I actually like having the Hawks and cats around because they keep the ground squirrels and other things away. Not always the raccoons, or the skunks which are usually just passing by, but pretty much everything smaller than that gets handled by the cats.

I should've prefaced this that we live in the middle of the city but are very close to irrigation channels that end in the river and in an area that was used as farmland before it was subdivided over 70 years ago. The animals passing through is something that kinda comes with the territory.

We use these on our picture windows and it seems to work. But then you have these on your windows. It's a trade off I suppose.
My wife also feeds the birds in our neighborhood. She is friends with the crows now. They hang out with her while she is doing chalk art in the driveway. Personally, I like the Brewer's Blackbirds. They come in flocks of like 80 and are crazy colors in the sun.

But to not avoid the OP topic, I have 3 dogs currently and no cats. Not because I don't like cats, I just like hiking/camping with my dogs. Growing up I had a cat that was basically a non-newtonian fluid that would follow you around until you sat/laid down, just so he could lay on you. So chill, he was awesome. The second cat lived to be 20 and was a cool asshole. He was declawed, but would still kick everyone's ass. I feel bad that he was an outdoor cat (I had no say and no idea how annoying it can be for others when I was younger). Anyway, we had to pass him around to different relatives in our family because he was such a jerk. But I remember one time, I came home from a night out here in Denver. He was sitting on my wife's SUV in the driveway. I look over and there is a fox sitting on our porch and they are just staring at each other. Even without front claws, that fox is lucky I scared him away. Mongo would have messed him up.

**** me for oversharing but I figure it's a good as topic in the Bar as any. We lost our beloved kitty, Burroughs, this month. He was a mutt rescue in New Mexico but had all the hallmarks of some Maine Coon being his progenitor.

him as a baby after breaking his leg trying to jump on a window ledge:

him older when he had recovered and liking my shoes:

burroughs in his prime with a lion cut and on a diet (and the sweater was not my idea):

We miss him a lot but my wife has decided to adopt 2 more kitties to honor his legacy, and I am close to getting over grieving enough to be on board with it.

I just want an honest and civil discussion here about why you people who hate cats, hate cats?
Sorry for your loss.

I don't know if this is necessarily true, but I've heard that cats really could care less about their owners. I wouldn't know, and I'm not looking to get into a big argument about it with anyone, just saying. Personally, I've never been a pet person, including cats, but especially dogs. I understand how people can be, but to me, they are simply more of a nuisance than anything; and I think the cons outweigh the pros. I feel like their ability to provide companionship is their biggest pro, but I simply have never needed that from an animal (at least, not yet; maybe when I'm old and lonely, who knows).

I can only speak from my own experience, but cats 'can' care a lot about their owners. When Burroughs got older and demented and didn't know where we were when he was in another room, his howls of separation anxiety were just fucking heartbreaking. I can still remember them.

And sorry for your loss Ole. I lost my first dog in August 2019. Fortunately I woke up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. I found him by the front door and was able to be with him while he passed (He wasn't in that bad of condition for how old he was. Vets think a cyst ruptured or something.). I will never forget that moment, for better or worse. And I still miss him everyday.
I hope your new kittens are badass.
