Uh, yes it is. You're not there every home game brah.
They do it alot when the Wings aren't even here.
I attend nearly every home game, and have been attending pretty regularly since 1999. The chants are here and there. Usually when an announcement that the Hawks are going to play the Wings will stir up a chant.
Has it happened on an off night?
Yup.
It is stupid?
Yup.
It doesn't bother me like it used to. There are so many god damned stupid fans that walk through the gates that a "Detroit Sucks" chant pales to some of the morons that sit around me that just utter some of the worst hockey abortions on the face of this planet.
I am happy that this team got a breath of new life in 2007. The reaction was discovering hockey again for many people that abandoned it, and a whole generation that was nearly lost to it while watching the shitty ABC line lose more than they won.
The sad fact is that we have new fans understanding a sport that has been in their back yard for nearly a century. The Blackhawks are like an expansion team to some.
I actually heard a grown man last year yell "get the ball!" He was serious. So serious he said it twice. I've been to quite a few buildings around the league, and will be traveling to Florida when they play the Panthers/Lightning. We'll see how the hockey faithful in the south compare to the newbs that flock to the UC to flex their knowledge and yap their gums.
One of my buddies said that he misses the 7K of knowledgeable fans that used to go. I like the full atmosphere, and can handle so much before my brain begins to melt at the rows of hockey-stupid.
It's one thing to slowly learn the game.
It's another to be an ignorant fool and think that the price you paid for a ticket is license to be a yammering fool for three periods while drinking shitty overpriced UC beer.
