You folks are all debating the wrong topic. Is it/isn't it a sport. Who gives a shit? I would say it is just as much a sport as billiards or ping-pong.

The debate should be: what warrants a scholarship to college? If I'm the best pool player in the Southeast does that mean I should get a scholarship to college. How about ping-pong?

Fucking ridiculous that cheerleading leads to a scholarship. What do you do with that after college? Become a pro cheerleader? Fucking useless just as many other "sports".

I would definitely call ping-pong a sport. When two top players are going at it it's absolutely insane.

So does this mean that Texas Hold'em is a sport? Apparently it is if ESPN carries it.... I'll never consider it as such, though.

Nevertheless, I put cheerleading in a similar category.

If you look up the official definition of "sport" most if not all definitions do stress that physical activity and capabilities need to be involved. If you think cheerleading and/or dancing doesn't require physical activity and capabilities then you are out of your mind. Of course these are sports. But by the same definition so would be breathing. HOWEVER for something to fit into the criteria of sport it also has to involve competativeness and it needs to be organized. Soooooooooooooo......take it for what you will. Under the definition of "sport" activities like dancing, cheerleading, race car driving, darts, bowling, etc etc etc are indeed sports.

Blame the Brits.

Going by the terms of said post above, then why the hell is Texas Hold'em shown on ESPN?

Sure I know that. My point is that most of those cheerleaders do it for little pay and as a hobby. It isn't a full-time job. They have other full-time jobs (unless they are of the college age).

So, regular sex could/could not be called a sport, depending on the definition used, but an orgy definitely could.

They just announced on so you think you can dance that Gatorade is officially recognizing DANCING AS A SPORT. No I wasn't watching, the wife is in the other room and it's as loud as anything you've ever heard in your life.

Here is the official definition:

Sport: an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.

By that definition, I'd say cheerleading is considered a "sport"... but I think the definition can be broken down into more specific definitions for sure.
