Anyone a chess player? I play occassionaly and I'm not very good, but if anyone wants to hit me up for a match I have an account at Chess.com.

I've been playing corespondance type games on my cell phone using the chess.com app.

If anyone wants to play a game that way or if you see me online at chess.com you can hit me up for a game. Username: phranchk

I used to be an excellent player, even a champ in grade school. Played some after that but never stayed into it. Like chess, but it just doesn't quite do it for me anymore, probably because I stopped playing with people I knew, no one wanted to play anymore.

I don't have the patience to be any good at it. i.e. when i play I never plan ahead, try to lure people into traps etc. I generally approach it like checkers, which makes me too easy to beat.

It's definitely the reason I never played much chess. That kind of strategy is not my strong suit.

Very figured it out and no one ever showed me any. I know how all the pieces move and all that but that is the extent of it.

I think there is some underlying messages in Chess.

The King is a very weak piece, he can only move one space at a time. The queen however is the most powerful and necessary piece on the board. So I think Chess is trying to tell us that women are more powerful than men.

The dudes in front move only one space forward, and diagonally one space to take a piece.

The castle guy can move either up or down or side to side.

The one that looks like Ernie from Sesame Street moves diagonally.

The horsey guy moves like the letter L.

The Queen can do almost anything she wants.

The King doesn't do shit but get taken and I lose.

I guess there is a move that let's the King do something neat, but I dunno what it is.

There is all my chess knowledge.

I'm familiar with several different offensive and defensive strategies thanks to teaching mode on the few handheld or PC chess games I've had, but serious players would eat my lunch.

Alas, I could never pick the game up from my mother---I don't have the skillset for strategy games like Chess and Go.

This is actually shocking to me... I figured this would be right up your ally.... and what the hell is Go?

Shouldn't be shocking---I am only decent at word games. I am a straight-up doofus when it comes to any strategy or numbers thingies! Go is an ancient Japanese board game of strategy not dissimilar to chess in that you play with black and white stones but fundamentally different in actual play and rules. Both require a shitload of strategic thought though so in that sense they are like two peas in a pod. In any event, like chess or learning to use an abacus, I could never pick it up when I was younger either so. . . oh well.

Well for one the King is the only piece that cannot be taken...it's a Checkmate....game over.

That move is called castle, the King moves two spaces left or right and the rook is placed on the other side of the King.

To make that move the King and the Rook must not have been moved Yet.

Yes I have played the game, but not in the last 20 years
