Not surprised. I just hope this team can make a lot of noise in the playoffs.

I'll start this thread I guess. I'm ok with the Oduya move. He's a not a good size D-man thinks defensively first tho. Doesn't solve our PP issue, but could help with the PK.

Oduya Player Bio

ASSETS: Is a great skater with the instincts to limit the damage to a minimum in the defensive zone. Owns an infectious attitude and is a solid teammate. Can occasionally play a shutdown role.

FLAWS: Isn't a major offensive threat, nor is he big by National Hockey League standards. Also lacks the temperament to play with physical aggression on a consistent basis. Lacks consistency.

CAREER POTENTIAL: Mobile defensive defenseman.

Doesn't take many PIMS, looks to play a smart defensive game

What did Stan say?

This team is good enough to win a stanley cup

too many buyers not enough sellers to make moves

we need healthy players...that will help alot

alot of more bureaucratic stuff

Ehhh, I mean what else is he supposed to say?

Pretty generic stuff. I'm sure there are another 10 GMs saying that, whether they believe it or not.

Oduya = Nick Boynton without the attitude imo ... not going to make a difference. This was the big move that the team saved up all of the cap space for- that's the bottom line.

Well, good luck with that then.

Prices were high, no doubt. The few teams that made the bigger deals (Vancouver, Nashville) absolutely paid for their acquisitions and truth be told- both of those teams are closer to the Cup than the Hawks so good for them.

All the stuff about not enough sellers was also true. HawkWriter said it best- the 3 point game essentially kills the deadline. Just how it is.

The good thing is the Hawks went for defense. Everyone knows that's what they needed and if they were only going to make one move- I'm glad they did it on D. Yes, they gave up 2 picks but that's just how it is. There wasn't a ton of D moving so they got what they could. Can't get to down on them for that.

Also good for the Hawks- they didn't try to scrap together a goaltender. Khabibulin wasn't going to take this team any further than what they have now and it's clear that the Islanders didn't want to give up Nabakov. It was really interesting to hear that SJ was possibly willing to include Niemi in a deal for JVR... but again... high prices.

Obviously it's disappointing that no forwards were picked up. The good news is that the busts the Hawks picked up this past off season will be off the books (minus Frolik) so they can start fresh with filling out this roster around the core. The bad news is that Stan didn't do such a good job last time so what are the odds he'll get it right next time? We'll have to wait and see... it's not like the needs are hard to see.

He got a pass the first year with the cap problems. Fine.

He tried to- for lack of a better word - half-ass it this past off season and clearly that's not the answer. Nobody is happy about it but with the super short term contracts, it was a very low-risk gamble. The only thing lost is time.

He hardly did anything at the deadline even though he had a lot of cap room to work with. The good news for him is that he wasn't lying or posturing about prices being steep so he gets at least a semi-pass for not going bananas. The bad news is that two of the teams above the Hawks (Van+Nash) did pay a lot and got better. We can only wait to see how that pans out.

Long story short- this year's playoffs :)pray:) and upcoming off season are huge. He got by today by the skin of his teeth.
